STREET VS SHELTER: THE FORCED CHOICE OF HOMELESS PEOPLE
Economic inequality is one of the main causes of homelessness. Studies found that economic inequality leads to increases in rental market, which produces homelessness.
Housing policies is one of the contextual factors considered involved in the causes of homelessness, or better says in maintaining homelessness, both in Italy and US.
The lack of information shared through media about the condition of homeless people, the fact that people with power listen more to richer neighbourhood request to remove people from street, instead of listening the homeless people’s need, the fact that there is a major system of hiding their situation and a lack of interest in helping them creating a better life not only to make the streets of the city look better to the viewer, but mostly to make homeless people cared and supported through a process of life development: These issues are what make the situation of shelters and support to homelessness inadequate
CONCLUSION
The crisis of shelters and the issues within the system left people without:
protection of a safe space,
protection from the State,
protection of their human rights.
Eyes should be put on the individual needs, addressing structural issues, not hiding the problem of street homelessness generating shelters that do not work and/or that increase the violence and the sense of hopelessness of people
