Students learn academic content in their home language and English. The goals are grade-level academic achievement and graduating as bilingual and biliterate with the Seal of Biliteracy.
Transitional Bilingual Education (TBE): Students are grouped by home language. Teachers use the home language for academic instruction until the students reach English proficiency through ESL.
Other Bilingual: Instructional programs that use home language but are not Dual Language or Transitional Bilingual Education.
Students with Limited or Interrupted Formal Education (SLIFE)
Students with Limited or Interrupted Formal Education (SLIFE) are newcomers, have English Language Development (ELD) levels 1 or 2, are at least two years behind their grade level peers in native language literacy, and have limited or interrupted formal schooling. Students receive intensive literacy and core content instruction in the home language.
Language Specific or Multilingual SEI: Students with English Language Development (ELD) levels 1 to 3 receive sheltered instruction in English to make grade-level academic content more accessible. Students also receive the required minutes per day of English as a Second Language (ESL).
Students are taught in English only and transition into general education classrooms with their grade level peers after meeting exit criteria.
