Unit 1: An Introduction to the Course

Goals/Objectives for the Unit:

  • Students & instructor will begin to get to know each other. Instructor will gain an understanding of students' prior knowledge, interests, etc.
  • Students will gain an understanding of the expectations/policies of the course.
  • Students will begin to consider goals for their learning.

Homework:

  • Possibly: Read through the Course Expectations. (Or would we rather do this as in-class work? We'll decide together...) Practice active reading strategies. In other words, "mark up" the text. The following are suggestions:
    • Highlight, underline, and/or put a star next to things you think are especially important.
    • Circle and put a question mark next to things you question, would like to know more about, and/or disagree with.
    • Write margin notes as you go...questions you have, connections you make, general thoughts...

  • ADDED: Three students missed the first day but were in class today. Therefore, we did another round of introductions and I tried to give a little overview of what those students missed on Aug. 28.
  • Read through the Course Expectations. Practice active reading strategies. In other words, "mark up" the text. The following are suggestions:

  • Students share examples of videos they have created (option/volunteer).
  • If time, students will begin to gain familiarity with the JVC 4K camera that we will be using.

1-day late: Questionnaire (those who missed class on 8/28).

Process p. 12 - 17: Write down 2 tips that make a lot of sense to you and you think you will try to use. Write down 1 tip that you have an issue with or you think might not apply in some circumstances, such as live streaming a sporting event. Discuss.

Read p. 137 - 142 (intended as in-class activity, may assign as homework if needed)
