Not long after Europeans arrived in what is now Alberta the need for coal to heat homes and trains was evident. There are many of the coal mines that you can visit today. Although these are not in use any longer, there are a few mines that remain today, but with much pressure for those concerned with finding cleaner energy sources, these are in jeopardy.
Oil was first discovered in Ontario in 1857 and was found in Alberta in 1914. The Athabasca Oil Sands (Northern Alberta)are one of the largest oil reserves in the world.
