Efficiency - measure of how completely input energy is converted to accomplish the desired output energy
Fluorescent light bulb - a glass tube which radiates light when phosphor on its inside surface is made to fluoresce by ultraviolet radiation from argon and mercury vapour. The stream of electrons flow through the gas from one electrode to the other. As the electrons move back and forth, they strike atoms in the vapour, causing photons to be produced. The photons strike the phosphor coating on the inside of the tube, creating visible light.
Incandescent light bulb - consists of a very thin wire or filament inside a glass sphere that generates heat when the filament has a stream of electrons flowing through it. The wire glows white hot thus producing white light.
Approximately 1/3 of the energy spent in a house is used by appliances. This explains why consumers want to have energy efficient appliances. When purchasing an appliance, more than the price tag goes into the overall cost of the appliance.
Real Cost of machines (not including water consumption)
Why does an incandescent light bulb get so much hotter than a fluorescent light bulb?
