Solving word problems using GRASP
In small groups, you will need to solve the following word problems using GRASP.
Once you have finished, we will do a carousel activity to record each of the answers.
The Apartment Mailbox System
An apartment building installs a mailbox system made up of identical metal cubes (each 30 cm × 30 cm × 30 cm) arranged in a 2 × 3 formation. The entire structure is encased in a metal frame, leaving the front side open. Find the total surface area of metal needed to construct the unit, excluding the front openings of the cubes.
The Storage Container Stack
A warehouse stacks three rectangular storage containers on top of each other. Each container is 2 m long, 1.5 m wide, and 1 m tall. The front and back faces are fully exposed, while the sides touching another container are not. Find the total surface area that needs to be painted, excluding overlapping areas.
The Truck with a Trailer
A moving truck consists of a rectangular cab (2.5 m wide, 3 m tall, 4 m long) and a larger rectangular trailer (2.5 m wide, 3 m tall, 8 m long). The back of the cab and the front of the trailer are flush against each other. Find the total surface area that needs to be painted, excluding the overlapping face.
The Tent with a Base
A camping tent has a triangular prism roof (base width = 3 m, height = 2 m, length = 4 m) sitting on top of a rectangular prism base (3 m × 4 m × 1 m). The entire tent needs a waterproof covering, excluding the bottom. Find the total surface area that needs waterproofing.
An artist creates a sculpture by stacking two identical cubes (each 1 m × 1 m × 1 m) on top of a rectangular prism base (1 m × 1 m × 2 m). The cubes are stacked directly in the center of the base. Find the total surface area of the sculpture that needs to be painted, excluding hidden overlapping faces.
The Connected Greenhouses
A farmer builds two rectangular prism greenhouses, each 5 m wide, 10 m long, and 3 m high, and connects them with a third rectangular passageway (2 m wide, 3 m long, 3 m high). Find the total surface area that needs glass covering, excluding the overlapping connection area.
The Apartment Garbage Chute
A high-rise building installs a garbage chute that consists of a cylindrical tube (diameter = 0.6 m, height = 12 m) connected to a rectangular prism base (1 m × 1 m × 2 m) where trash is collected. The entire structure is wrapped in heat-resistant material, except for the bottom of the base and the top opening. Find the total surface area that needs insulation.
The Movie Theater Entrance
A movie theater entrance has a triangular prism roof (base width = 6 m, height = 2.5 m, length = 8 m) sitting on top of a rectangular prism doorway (6 m × 8 m × 4 m). The exterior of the entrance needs decorative tiles, but the bottom and back wall (attached to the building) do not. Find the total surface area that needs to be tiled.
