Objective:
Introduce linear equations using visual models (algebra tiles, number lines, balance scales).
Help students understand equality and how operations affect both sides of an equation.
Go to Polypad: Investigating Solving Equations and complete the mini lesson portion of the lesson. You will find the link in Google Classroom. We will work through these at the same time until you are ready to practice independently.
Form groups of 3 or 4 and select one of the scenarios below. Keep in mind you may not be able to do the one you initially wanted if other groups have already selected it.
🔍 Scenario Choices (Students pick one)
Savings Growth: You save $20 every week in a piggy bank.
Population Trend: A small town gains 150 people per year.
Running Distance: You run at a steady pace of 8 km/h.
Streaming Data: You use 2.5 GB of data every hour while streaming.
Using your handout, complete each of the sections. Once your group has finished, check in to see if it is correct. You will then be given instructions to record your work onto a vertical surface.
You will then complete a jigsaw activity, showcasing your work to others in the class. Each group will have 2 minutes to show your work before moving onto the next station.
