Edwards Petting Farm is a working farm that offers students and chaperones a hands-on experience. Jennifer Edwards serves as the personal guide for your students whether through a virtual tour or in-person excursion at the farm. Virtual story times are also available.
Grades: K-12
Site: 2948 Webb Road, Binghamton, NY
Audience Size: No minimum or maximum; Picnic seating of 60-70
Length of Performance: 2 hours
Description:
We offer an interactive hands-on farm experience. Upon arriving at the farm, which is handicap accessible, we will have an informational meeting with your guide, Jennifer, and she will let you know a little about the animals you will be seeing. After the introduction, students will be able to get hands on with the animals in the petting area. This is a working farm, so animals come and go but there are plenty of bunnies, goats, some sheep, alpacas, donkeys, ducks, chickens and a pony. Occasionally there will be a calf and maybe a pig. Many of our animals are either very old or have been hand raised, so are very friendly. There are fact sheets about the animals posted by every pen.
When the excitement dies down we will have a question and answer session before touring the horses and the cow barn where you will see the cows up close enjoying a special snack. If time allows we can go back to the petting area.
Farming can teach many lessons and your tour can be personalized to include topics of interest. Examples are habitats, gestations, economics (farms raise the food we eat), and senses (explore the many textures on the farm). The possibilities are endless. A coloring book will be sent home with the students as well as any specific information teachers would like to have to tie into their classroom learning.
If you would like to extend your visit, there are picnic tables available to have a snack or lunch. Jennifer will be with you throughout the tour to answer questions as they come up. A fenced in playground areas is also available.
