Critical Illness coverage provides a lump-sum cash benefit upon a diagnosis of a critical illness like a heart attack, stroke or cancer. The benefit can be used to pay out of pocket expense or supplement your daily cost of living. Pre-existing condition clauses do exist.

Short Term disability is income insurance that can help supplement your income when you are out of work for more than 2 weeks due to medical reasons. Examples being maternity leave, treatment, injury recovery. They will pay 60% of your income for the time you are unable to work.
