There are a variety of reasons why holidays are celebrated annually, whether it be honoring history, honoring religion, celebrating simply due to tradition, etc. Some holidays that take place in the time frame of winter break include Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Lunar New Year, New Year's Eve, Old New Year, Yule, Las Posadas, Omisoka, and Bodhi Day. Although these holidays are all observed very differently, many of them include gift exchange, musical festivities, cooking, prayer, games, and more. Through the student body, curricular activities, and additional events such as Culture Week, The International School of Beaverton can be mutually praised for its outstanding efforts to celebrate various cultures. Furthermore, ISB aims to teach students through an "international lense". With this, what are our students and staff doing over Winter break to celebrate? rest, and participate in traditions? After interviewing individuals, the following feedback was received as to what their winter break looks like at a glance. Many voiced their plan to get lots of rest, participate in activities such as sledding and ice skating, see family and friends, travel, and celebrate religious holidays. Exemplifying this, teacher Audrey Schiefelbein says their holiday season consists of spending time with "family and friends" and "always going to be good conversation, laughter, great food." Additionally, 8th grader Sophia likes to spend the holiday season by "spending time with my family and watching movies." With that, our school community displays how even with so many different cultures and different-looking backgrounds, we see winter as a time to indulge in the comfort of family time, rest, and enjoyment.
THE ISB COMMUNITY:
During the holiday season, middle school students enjoy various activities with friends and family and celebrate different holidays. Sophia and Zuhayr (ISB 8th Graders) report enjoying spending time with family and grandparents whilst watching movies, feasting, and enjoying the holiday spirit. Sydney enjoys baking fresh goods and doing activities such as ice skating and watching movies.
Freshmen enjoy various activities instead of the holiday spirit. Ky Le (Freshman) reports exchanging gifts and enjoying gambling with his family. Hannah and Genna enjoy sleeping and resting during the holidays. Genna enjoys watching Christmas movies and decorating the Christmas tree in her house.
Sophomore Julian enjoys playing video games while Joey enjoys spending time with his family and opening gifts.
Junior Evan reports that he will be studying for the ACT and encourages others to keep in touch with academics over the break.
Amongst the staff, Mr. Bricken, Mr. Thomas, Mr. Ashkinos, Ms. Bailee, and Mrs. Schiefelbein all report traveling to spend time with family. Ms. Dickerson says she enjoys holiday food and doing "Amazon boxes." Ms. Yeager reports enjoying baking and spending time outdoors.
