From Mr. Arnold:
Hello, families and friends of BMS! It's March and BMS is nine school days from the end of the quarter at this writing. Spring Break is around the corner and our days are getting longer with Daylight Savings time right around the corner. As we turn the corner from the long, cold winter our kids and staff are getting excited for what the "stretch run" brings to the building. As we enter March we look forward to Spring Break the week of March 16th. For any of our families that are extending their trip on the front and/or back ends of our break please be sure to contact the office and your student's teachers. When we return from Spring Break we will be starting the 4th quarter at BMS. During that time we see each grade level taking field trips, using our outside spaces, and more projects and work to be completed before the year ends. This time of year is also more difficult for students as they get outside and have more trouble prioritizing their homework/studies when the weather makes a turn for the better. Please continue to check on your student's grades and if they are keeping up with their assignments. As always, we appreciate all the work our families put in to make their students successful.
If you look below in the Announcements and News of Interest section, you will see some important dates and events that are coming up soon at BMS.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me or any staff at BMS. We are happy to help in any way we can.
MOST IMPORTANTLY, THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO EVERY DAY AND ALL YEAR TO MAKE THIS A GREAT PLACE TO TEACH FOR THE 6-8 STAFF!
The Class of 2030 will be going on the annual Bryan Middle School 8th Grade trip to Chicago on Thursday May 7 and Friday May 8, 2026. To date, all 8th graders have had the opportunity to work one or more concession events to earn $50 toward the individual cost of their trip. Chaperones, all employess of Bryan City Schools, will be finalized soon and plans for both days are completed.
As March begins, paperwork has been issued to all our 8th graders to be submitted by March 6th to check our numbers and make final calculations for the coming trip. If you are family of an 8th grader and have not seen and/or signed the paperwork, please check in with your student asap.
On Tuesday March 3rd, 14 Bryan MS students, under the guidance of LSW Angelle Reineck, who advises our building Youth in Action group participated in a Countywide ECHO Coalition sponsored Youth Summit Event. The event is designed to empower students to lead projects in their schools on mental health & substance prevention. Students focused on topics that impact their schools and develop programming to combat these issues. Bryan MS students have chosen the topic of developing programming around inclusiveness in their school by creating a buddy table at lunches so all students have a place where they are welcome and feel included. 4 HS Youth in Action students will also be in attendance to assist in running activities for the MS students.
On March 10, 109 seventh and eighth graders from Bryan Middle School and Hicksville Schools will participate in the annual Mi.S.S.I.L.E. (Middle School Students Involved in a Literary Encounter) Day. All students are in an advanced or honors ELA class and have studied the same literature for the quarter. This year's theme is ROOTS AND DREAMS which includes two novels: Brown Girl Dreaming by Jaqueline Woodson and The Glory Field by Walter Dean Myers. They also analyzed Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech. The day will include a variety of friendly competition and activities such as quiz bowl and a performance showcase. The students will learn about poetry from a BGSU student group called the Inklings. Some students will come away with prizes from the book quiz and writing competitions.
Twenty-five 6th grade students and a teacher will be attending the Mini Manufacturing Event for students in grades 5–6 on Friday April 10. This hands-on, engaging experience is designed to ignite curiosity about modern manufacturing and the career pathways it offers. Students will team up with local manufacturers and dive into exciting, hands-on activities that build real-world skills.
The JH music programs are continuing to complete their spring concerts and working hard as we prepare to enter the 4th and final quarter of the 2025-26 school year. Also, awards and recognitions are being received by our groups, ensembles, and individuals. Please contact us or check us out online if you are interested in information about any of that.
Bryan 7th graders who achieve All A's, B's, and C's on their 3rd quarter report card will be awarded with a day trip to 5/3 Field in Toledo to see the Toledo MudHens play on Wednesday May 6. This has proven to be a great trip and a fun day for our students in the past and we are looking forward to our trip again this spring. The 3rd quarter ends on Thursday March 12th.
Bryan's Middle School Academic League team won the Williams County double elimination tournament earlier in February. Over the course of the tournament Jackson Vashaw was the leading scorer followed by Aubrey Kunsman and Nolan Roberts. Other team members were Riley Bever, Luke Avell, Richie Hogan, James Deemer, Addy Hendricks, Addelyn Wolford, Kaitlyn Spencer and the team was led by Mrs. Heslop. Congratulations to all on a phenomenal job!
Per the new State Law, effective January 1, 2026, cell phones will NOT be permitted for student use throughout the entire school day. While current BCS policy already prohibits usage during instructional time, the main change is that phones must also remain out of sight and on silent or powered off during lunches/cafeteria time and hallway passing periods. Students may still bring their devices to school, and may keep them on their person as long as they are stored out of sight. Phones and earbuds are also not permitted on AM or PM school transportation if requested by the driver. Exceptions for use may be made by teachers for specific lessons or for earbuds connected to a student’s Chromebook during study hall. If you need to reach your student during the school day, please contact the main office.
The consequences for violating the updated BCS cell phone policy, effective January 5, 2026, are as follows:
Offense Action Taken Device Status
First Offense Warning and documentation Stay in the office the rest of the day.
Second Offense Lunch detention Stay in the office the rest of the day.
Third Offense After School Detention (ASD) Held until a parent comes to retrieve them.
Fourth or More Offenses Administrative decision Held until a parent comes to retrieve them.
Could result in in-school or out-of-school suspension.
MS/HS Attendance item:
Students who miss school for a doctor's appointment, must return with a note for it to be excused. If the student returns without a doctor's note, per BCS attendance policy located in the student handbook, students have 5 days upon the return of their appointment to provide a doctor's note. If one is not attained the absence will be changed to unexcused. Doctor notes may be faxed to 419-633-6281 or emailed to attendance9-12@bryanschools.net.

From Mr. Alspaugh:
It’s hard to believe we have already reached March! Despite multiple snow days we have been incredibly busy and productive. We kicked off the year with a senior movie night on January 17th in the cafeteria. Then, over 50 students participated in Solo & Ensemble on January 24th, followed by a standout performance at the OMEA State Conference in Columbus over January 29-31, where Emma Schlade, Noah Mills, and Henry Burton represented BHS. Our musicians continued to shine at the Winter High School Orchestra Concert on February 8th, the HS Choir, HS Band, and A Capella concerts on March 1st. We look forward to the Choir program’s upcoming trip to Nashville from March 6th–8th for specialized clinics and performances.
As if that isn't enough, following our Guidance Night on January 27th, students, submitted their course requests for the 2026-2027 school year. Last week our Juniors took the free ACT on February 24th, and a number of students took the Accuplacer on February 26th. Then our Academic League team competed at the ESC on February 27th. Amongst all the daily events and the weather, we hosted a Distracted Driving Assembly, reminding our young drivers to stay focused, know their limits, and never text while behind the wheel. We wrap up the third quarter with our annual CEO Day on March 11th and then March 12th is the end of the quarter. After that, it’s a well-deserved Spring Break before we return for spring musical, "The Little Mermaid", scholarship interviews, and multiple rounds of State testing in April, plus our Senior Signing Day on April 24th.
Seniors should be checking their email on a regular basis. Mrs. Bassett is regularly sending out scholarship information. Don't miss out on those scholarship opportunities.
In April, we will be doing our annual End-of Course testing. To support our Grade 9–11 students, we want to clearly outline the final exam exemption criteria for core subjects, which include Government, History, Biology, English, Algebra, and Geometry.
Standard Exemption Pathway:
Students are eligible for an exemption by achieving an End-of-Course (EOC) score of 700 or higher and maintaining a minimum of a 74% average for the second semester.
Alternative Exemption Pathway (Algebra and English Only):
For Algebra and English specifically, students can still qualify for an exemption with a slightly lower EOC score of 684 if they meet two additional requirements:
Maintain a 74% semester grade.
Attend at least 50% of scheduled tutoring sessions.
We strongly encourage parents to monitor their student's progress toward these benchmarks. Consistent effort on assignments and utilizing available tutoring are the most effective ways to reduce stress related to end-of-year testing.
Please avoid making appointments on these State Testing Dates:
English - April 14 & 16
Math - April 21 & 23
Social Studies - April 24
Science - April 28 & 29
Congratulations to the Bryan Academic League team at Northwest State Community College. They played in a single elimination tournament on February 27th for their winter season.
The Varsity team defeated Patrick Henry 375-35, Wauseon 240-100, Holgate 335-70, and Defiance 275-200 to become tournament champs!
JV defeated Holgate 140-70, Evergreen 155-100, and lost in a nail biter to Pettisville 90-100 earning them 2nd place!
Both teams did a phenomenal job! Outstanding work, Golden Bears!
Students from Mrs. Cummins' college credit plus math courses competed in the Trine University math competition on Wednesday, February 25th. A good time utilizing their math skills was had by all involved.
Students from Mrs. Cummins' Problem-Based Algebra 2 class attended the Engineer for a Day program hosted by the University of Toledo on Thursday, February 26th. Students spent the morning touring the engineering facilities at UT and then job shadowed engineers at The Mannik & Smith Group in Maumee, learning about environmental engineering, site engineering, surveying, and drone technology.
The Senior Exam Exemption allows qualifying students to be excused from one or all of their final exams.
Exemption Period: Tuesday, January 20, 2026 – Tuesday, May 12, 2026
Senior Exam Dates: Wednesday, May 13 & Thursday, May 14, 2026
This exemption applies only to seniors currently taking face-to-face classes at BHS.
It does NOT apply to students in:
Four County Career Center
NSCC classes (on-site or at Northwest State)
Online courses
To be exempt from an exam, students must meet both grade and attendance requirements for that class:
1. Grades
Have a semester average of $84\%$ or higher in the class.
2. Attendance (3rd & 4th Quarters)
Zero (0) unexcused absences.
Maximum of three (3) tardies to school.
Maximum of five (5) total absences.
Note: Absences for doctor appointments (with a note), college visits, or military requirements do not count against the absence total.
Students are encouraged to regularly check their grades and attendance. Students who lose the exemption due to attendance issues will be contacted at the start of the 4th quarter.
As we approach the end of the 3rd quarter and Spring Break, please note that final exams are scheduled for Wednesday, May 20, through Friday, May 22. These exams account for 20% of your student’s semester grade, which can significantly impact their final GPA. Because of the importance of these assessments, we ask that you please avoid scheduling doctor appointments, vacations, or other planned absences during these three days.
Here are some key details:
Full Day (May 20): Wednesday is a full school day focused on graduation events, exam prep, and the 11th-period exam.
Early Dismissal (May 21 & 22): High School students will be dismissed at 12:25 PM. Please arrange transportation at this time, as school buses will not depart until the end of the regular school day. Students remaining for the bus must stay in the cafeteria (lunch service is available from 12:25–12:35 PM).
Leaving Campus Early: Students with exemptions, study halls, or CCP/Music classes may leave early on the 21st and 22nd. To do so, a parent note specifying the dates and times must be submitted (available starting May 14). For safety, phone permissions will require a parent or approved adult to enter the building and physically sign the student out.
Daily Schedule:
Wednesday, May 20: Full Day; 11th Period Exam (1:30–2:45 PM).
Thursday, May 21: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Period Exams
Friday, May 22: 4/5, 5/6, 6/7, 7/8, and 10th Period Exams (Note: Bryan students are dismissed at 1:15 PM).

Congratulations to Henry Burton (OMEA All-State Orchestra), Noah Mills and Emma Schlade (OMEA All State Choir) who performed at the OMEA Professional Conference. For Henry, this was his second consecutive year as a member of the All-State Orchestra and as representative of BHS in a very select group. Noah and Emma represented BHS and Bryan as they sang with 160 of the finest high school choral musicians in the state of Ohio.
The All-State Orchestra was directed by Helen Cha-Pyo Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Wharton Institute for the Performing Arts, New Jersey’s largest independent performing arts education organization.
The All-State Choir Director was Rollo Dilworth. He is Associate Professor of Choral Music Education and Chair of the Music Education Department at Temple University's Esther Boyer College of Music and Dance in Philadelphia, PA.
Sunday, March 1st was a busy day for our Music Department as three ensembles held their annual Winter Concerts. It started at 2:00 with a Concert Choir performance in the cafeteria. This was followed at 3:00 by the HS Band concert in the gym. Closing the afternoon was a 4:00 concert by the A Cappella Choir, back in the cafeteria. Each performance involved judges critiquing the performance. In addition, they also had a section for sight reading that was also critiqued by a judge. We even had a chance to hear the BHS Bearbershop Quartet (Grason Butler, Josef Durbin, Noah Mills, Brenton Wheeler) perform the piece they performed at Solo & Ensemble. It was a beautiful and musical way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Great job to both directors and all three ensembles.
Last Friday, February 27th, saw our HS Orchestra travel to Perrysburg HS for the NW Ohio State Orchestra Contest. This 30+ member ensemble has spent the last few months preparing for this major event. For this event, they prepared three pieces, with one selected from a required list. This performance section of the program will be adjudicated by three judges from around the State of Ohio. They will then move to another area and be required to sight read a piece and be judged by a single judge on how they did. For this section they will only have a few minutes to look over the piece before having to perform it. In the end, they walked away with a well earned Superior rating. Congratulations to Mr. Simul and the Orchestra on this fabulous accomplishment. To mark this achievement, they received a warm welcome upon returning to Bryan that evening.
