The 6th Grade Beginning Band is designed for students with little or no prior musical experience. This foundational year focuses on developing proper playing habits, including posture, tone production, articulation, music reading, and rehearsal etiquette. Students may choose from flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, or trombone. At the end of the first semester, interested students may audition for percussion and may be selected to switch permanently to that section.
At the beginning of the school year, there will be NO PERCUSSION in sixth grade band at the beginning of the school year.
The 7th Grade Intermediate Band builds upon the skills developed during the first year of instruction. Students continue to strengthen their musical technique, tone quality, articulation, and music-reading abilities while developing greater independence and musicianship. Emphasis is placed on ensemble performance, responsibility, and continued growth as a musician.
The 8th Grade Advanced Band consists of students with at least two years of band experience. As the top curricular performing ensemble at Richmond Hill Middle School, this group focuses on refining technique, musicianship, and ensemble performance skills. Students are challenged with increasingly advanced literature and are prepared for a successful transition into high school band programs.
Wildcat Winds is an auditioned ensemble composed of the most advanced 7th and 8th grade band students. The group meets after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays and represents Richmond Hill Middle School through performances, festivals, and travel opportunities throughout the year. Audition materials and information will be distributed during the first two weeks of school.
*Membership in Wildcat Winds requires a significant commitment from both students and parents. Attendance at rehearsals and performances is essential to the success of the ensemble. *
