While there are many significant ancient civilizations, one of the most important is Ancient India. Ancient India is a term referring to the time period encompassing all of India before Medieval times. This spans the time period from around 3000 B.C.E. to around the 6th century C.E.. During these more than 3,000 years, Classical Indians created many important inventions and developments. The most famous and important developments include medicine, spices, mathematics, literature, and pottery. Many of these developments and inventions were products of ancient river valley civilizations, such as the Indus River Valley Civilization. These major developments were made possible because of the geographic and cultural influences during the ancient time period.
The Indian subcontinent is situated between the Indian Ocean to the south, and the Himalayan Mountain range to the north. The Indus and Ganges rivers, two very important rivers to modern-day and Ancient India, are also located in northern India. Geographically, India is separated from all civilizations around it; making invasions, as well as communication, difficult. Ancient China was the closest ancient civilization to Ancient India, but the Himalayan Mountains prevented many conflicts. India's geographic isolation led to the culture and physical inventions to develop rapidly due to their traditions being untouched by outside forces and civilizations. A main aspect of culture that developed in Ancient India is religion. Multiple widely-practiced religions sprouted out of the Indian empire during ancient times. The two most prominent are Hinduism and Buddhism. Both of these religions came out of India during the classical period. The Indian Empire had multiple rulers during its existence. The most notable of these is the Gupta Empire, which is when most of the important developments or inventions listed above came about. Ancient India has had many impacts on modern and ancient societies across the globe. This website will teach you all about the impacts of India's inventions!
