` ~ Welcome to Ancient Islam ~ `
During this tour, you will receive information on the great impacts of Ancient Islam. From Hospitals to mathematics, the trebuchet to calligraphy and chemistry, we will guide you through the history of Islam from 2000 BCE - 922 CE.
Islam spread from the Arabian Peninsula to present-day Spain in the west and northern India in the east over a few hundred years. It also quickly expanded throughout the Middle East, North Africa, and portions of Europe from its central location in Arabia. The Islamic world became centered on great cities like Baghdad in modern-day Iraq, Cairo in Egypt, and Cordoba in Spain, and goods, technology, knowledge, and ideas traveled through Arab countries--those are what this website aims to talk about.
` ~ TIMELINE ~ `
` ~ HISTORY OF ISLAM ~ `
“The founder of Islam was not a creative genius,” says Edmund Power, “Their originality consisted only in the manner in which he selected various elements from the various religions then represented in Arabia and combined them into a whole.”
The ancient history of central Afro-Eurasia, where Islam was located, from the reign of Alexander the Great to the Achaemenid king Cyrus II in Persia, the Sāsānian emperor Anūshirvan to Muhammad in the land of Arabia, is regarded as the prehistory of Islamdom. As an alternative, Muslims consider the period spanning from Adam to Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad. The development of the first societies in Western Asia established the conditions for possibilities when founding the Muslim empires. As alleged Axial Age religions of the region—Abrahamic, centered on the Hebrew patriarch Abraham, and Mazdean, revolved around the Iranian deity Ahura Mazdā—alongside their subsequent relative, Christianity, emerged and expanded, it was refined.
` ~ SUMMARY OF THE EXHIBIT ROOMS ~ `
First invented by the Chinese between the 5th and 3rd centuries BCE, the trebuchet was an interesting piece of technology that made drastic changes to warfare in its day.
Islamic calligraphy was developed around the 6th century and was commonly seen throughout Islam such as in the Quran; a holy book for Muslims.
MEDICINE: Islamic Hospitals - Sam J.
The Islamic Empire made its first hospital in 706 CE in Damascus and would set the standards of modern civilization with separate wards and different specialists for different diseases and ailments.
Chemistry in Ancient Islam was developed in 662 CE and is still used today while continuing to advance every second with the creation of alchemy and more by Jabir Ibn Hayyan.
MATHEMATICS: Algebra - Peyton S.
Algebra was practiced originally by the Babylons in 1900-1600 BCE. However, major contributions to it including the "Al kitab al-Mukhtasar fi Hisab al-Jabr wal-Muqabala" book published by Al-Kwharizmi made algebra what it is today.
