Addiction Allies, Charlottesville, VA
I served my internship with Virginia Leavell at Addiction Allies in Charlottesville, VA. Addiction Allies is a place for hope and recovery. They are a substance abuse treatment organization. Throughout my internship I had the opportunity to sit in on Intensive Outpatient sessions, learn more about the recovery process, as well as the different treatment options, and have one on one conversations with current and recovering addicts.

Virginia Leavell is a care coordinator at Addiction Allies. An average meeting with her clients include talking about their physical health which can also include getting them insurance, finding them a primary care physician, and scheduling them doctors appointments. She also does things like help them find housing and jobs. This is a huge responsibility so she has other people who help her with this job but she is the primary care coordinator. The other things she does is just have simple conversations with her clients such as asking them about how things are going with their families and how their relationships and friendships are going.
I learned that the process of recovery requires a lot more than just "quitting." Throughout my internship at Addiction Allies, I had the opportunity to sit in on an intensive outpatient sessions. These sessions are set up as a rotation and each patient has to go through and talk to everyone. The first person that they meet with is the psychologist. They meet with them to talk about the how they are doing mentally and ask if they have had any dangerous thoughts. The next person they meet with is the physician. The physician makes sure that they have taken their suboxone and are using the right amount at the right time, he also talks to them about other health conditions they may have. The final person they meet with is Virginia, the care coordinator. Virginia just talks to them about making sure that they have everything they need in general to survive. ie: food, shelter, water.
My initial contact with Virginia was over the phone, so sadly I do not have any proof of that. I was put in contact her by my mom's old boss, Mike Leeman. I am extremely thankful for this opportinity because this is something that I have always had a passion for. With the help of my mentor, I have decided that this is the field I want to go into after graduating.
Here is the set up of our first meeting. We had a hard time finding time to meet because they were in the middle of moving offices and I had prior commitments on Wednesdays. We finally got a date set and I went in and met with her for the first time. I am so thankful for Virginia and Addiction Allies and all of the opportunities they have provided me with!
