I will plan, advertise, and coordinate a successful Naloxone Certification program for my community. With the goal of bringing awareness to the Opioid Epidemic and certifying people in Narcan.
Above: I am talking to a class about Narcan and seeing if anyone is interested in taking the certification course.
My mentors for my community service project were Bryan Seale and Moira Satre. We worked together to get a Naloxone Certification program in our community. There has never been a Narcan certification program open to the community before and my main goal is to provide that opportunity to everyone. The first group I started talking to were students around the school. I used them as a test group to see how many people would be interested in taking the course. The response I got was overwhelming and so far I have over 220 people interested. I plan to open up this opportunity to the entire community eventually after I finish training the kids at school.
On September 19th, 2019, I attended the REVIVE! Training the Trainer course at RegionTen in Charlottesville, VA. I attended with course with my mom. I was the only high school student in a room full of substance abuse counselors, Department of Health workers, and other health care professionals. The course lasted 3 hours and we learned about everything that is required when training community members and the most effective ways to reach the audience we are presenting to.
I have currently trained over 20 individuals in Narcan administration. The course takes an hour and a half to complete. Throughout the training individuals learned what to look for when determining if it is a opioid overdose, the proper steps to take while administering Naloxone, the laws protecting individuals who administer Naloxone, and the steps to take after Narcan has been given. The most important thing that individuals learn in the course is what to do when administering Naloxone.
The legacy I am leaving behind in my community is the increased number of people who are certified to carry and administer Naloxone. This legacy started with the first group I trained which was the Orange County Youth Council. There were 20+ people at the training and each one of them passed meaning that they are now Narcan certified.
On tuesday, December 3rd, 2019, I recieved an email from Crystal Hale who is the director of the the Orange County Department of Social Services. Mrs. Hale informed me that Hilary Holladay from the Orange County review wants to interview me about the work I am doing with my Narcan project.
