This quote represents myself and my project quite well; George Bernard Shaw is explaining that the people who progress humanity forward are those who take risks and set out to change the world for the greater good. Hence, my project relates to sustainability for the good of humanity on Earth and I feel that I am setting out to change the world and make it a better place. A perfect quote wrapped within an intellectual blanket.
I am Caiden Davenport, a senior at Louisa County High School and member of National Honor Society, jazz ensemble, and the cross country and track teams. In school, I excel at math and science, especially physics, and have an interest in space exploration that has existed since an early age. This interest was superseded for an extensive time with an interest in architecture, but an engineering course during junior year attracted my interests to pursue engineering for my career. In the engineering course, the group project was a product Life Cycle Assessment of solar panel technology; hence, I realized my desired pursuits rest in the development of a more sustainable Earth, especially considering that this is currently humanity’s first and only planet. Considering my math and science interests and recent discovery of engineering, I hope to learn about authentic work in the field as well as steps towards sustainability as I prepare to study Mechanical Engineering in college.
My internship was under the guidance of Brandon Patterson and utilized authentic engineering documentation to perform engineering analyses by hand using mathematical principles relating to physics. These analyses were visually represented in CAD drawings as well as in a technical report.
My community service project was done in collaboration with fellow BRVGS senior Andrew Estes and was supervised by Todd Weidow. The goal was to develop the proposal for an outdoor academic area for utilization by current and future students and staff at the local Louisa County Middle School.
Considering the major events at the time of this project, namely the transition to electric vehicles and combatting climate change, my research focused on analyzing solar energy as a resource and why solar will be the future of energy generation due to the technological, economical, and societal advantages.
