Prior to completion of my internship experience, I hoped to gain some useful experience in the field of engineering. Under the guidance of mentor Brandon Patterson, I gained much more knowledge and experience than I could have predicted. To learn about some different fields of engineering in the time I had for the internship, Mr. Patterson set up a three-step project with the intent of drawing questions about certain elements and to learn to perform analysis important to understand. The analysis is widely done on computers today, but the importance of knowing what is happening in the background is crucial. Although pandemic restrictions prevented in-person meetings, we were able to conduct virtual meetings every two weeks to discuss project progress, questions, and next steps.
My internship mentor was Professional Engineer Brandon Patterson of Dominion Energy’s Electric Transmission Field Operations and Reliability department. In his role, he is the engineering support for transmission line crews and is responsible for engineering during emergency restoration from storms and equipment failures. He previously held roles at Dominion Energy in Transmission Engineering, Substation Engineering, and Transmission and Substation Construction.
