One of the most critical things for students and parents to know about online learning is that planning for online learning is almost as important as what students do every day in the course. Students who do not thoughtfully plan out "why, when, where and how" to learn online will tend to do more poorly in the unstructured environment of an online course.
Please see the 5 video modules below for information and strategies for successful online learning. The entire video AND the slideshow without video are available at the bottom of this page. In addition, our website for "Academic Success Skills" contains a page with Online Learning Tips.
Each student will need to complete a BRVGS Online Learning Plan and Contract for the 2020-21 school year. Parents and students will receive information regarding the requirements for that plan as school begins, but are recommended to begin thinking about planning for successful online learning between now and the start of the school year. You can see the template for the Online Learning Plan by clicking here, and students can make their own copy by clicking on "File" at the upper left of the Plan doc, and then on "Make a Copy."
If you do make your own copy, please rename it by adding your name at the end of the doc, so it is titled like this: "BRVGS Student/Parent Online Learning Plan Jane Smith."
Part 1: Online Learning - Introduction and Preparation:
Setting goals and preparing for when and how you will work on online classes.
Part 2: Showing Up and Time Management
"Showing up" means "how you should take an online course seriously," and Time Management is about how you will set your own times to meet course requirements and get things done.
Part 3: Communication
How much is too much? What should you communicate about? What does a really good email look like (and what does a "bad" email look like?)
Part 4: technology and Personalization:
What is the difference between an "instructional" issue and a "technology" issue? Where do you go when you run into a technology issue? How can you make online learning more "personal"?
Part 5: Working in Teams and YOUR learning plan.
How can you best work on team projects in an online setting? What do you need to think about in preparing your own online learning plan?
