Castles
Daniel L.
Castles were developed during the medieval period and were initially used for the military, but as they developed they were made out of stone instead of wood and were used to house the ruler. Castles were strategically placed in areas where defense was easier as well as adding more defense for extra protection.
Castles were usually huge in size, and building a castle would cost a ton of money and man power. Castles would take a huge amount of time to build, with some being built in a few months to some taking multiple years to build.
Castle Features and How They Were Used
There are many different types of defenses like arrow slits, moats, drawbridges, and castle walls. A more commonly known castle defense, the moat, was a common defense used by castles as it could easily narrow down the possible entry ways for invading armies. Castles also had castle walls to prevent entry of the castle, these walls were a key aspect to defending the castles. Castle walls delayed entry as invaders would have to breach through the wall with some sort of breaching device. Drawbridges is also another iconic castle feature as it allows for entry without having to swim through the nasty moat water, in fact moats were often filled with human waste to discourage the crossing of the moat without using the drawbridge(Anatomy of a Castle). Another castle feature would be arrow slits as they allowed for archers to easily shoot at the enemy while putting themselves at minimal risk of an archer shooting back
Political features of castles
These castles were also the center of politics in the medieval world, as the castle housed the ruler and many other important people, it served many different purposes and could function as a courthouse, police station, and many other services. It could also store a ton of resources and supplies(What Were Castles Actually For? - by Eric Falden). It was a very important invention during the medieval times, serving as a source of protection and as the center of politics, castles had a lasting impact on its civilization as today, as castles are seen as a major piece of the medieval period.
