What is the Fertile Crescent?

The Fertile Crescent refers to the land between the Mediterranean Sea, Tigris river, and the Euphrates river (Hays). It has ample ground for farmland and can support large populations of people. Around 9,000 B.C.E, the first small settlements arose around modern day Iraq. Around 5,000 B.C.E, the first true cities emerged in what is considered to be the first civilization, Sumer. The Fertile Crescent is considered to be the cradle of civilization.
