Currency and Money

A map of the Fertile Crescent
Around 6,000 B.C.E, settlements in the fertile crescent popped up. These settlements grew in size and wealth and soon grew to large cities. As larger civilizations and empires conquered these cities and more people moved into them, trade became very important. Many nations, such as the Phoenicians, got very wealthy on trade. The main way trade was done in this time was through barter, which means exchanging one good or service for another. This was fine as a system, but it needed an improvement, as multiple problems arose such as: it would be hard to acquire a good from someone if they didn’t want your good, some goods can spoil easily, etc. This was why money was so important in the Ancient world.
Many early forms of money existed, such as temples in Mesopotamia using currency to give to their gods. The first use of coins for money in the economy was done by the Lydians, a civilization in Asia minor, or modern day Turkey. They made coins out of a metal alloy named electrum. The idea of making coins out of metal caught on around other civilizations, and coins became the main form of currency around the fertile crescent. (Mary Mellor)

Money made civilizations in the fertile crescent very rich. This new found wealth let civilizations invest in large projects. Money also let civilizations trade with each other, which led to currency spreading around different countries.(Mary Mellor)
Money in later civilizations led to capitalism, an ideology that was based on individuals owning and making money. Capitalism became the most popular system of economics around the world. Over time, some people began to think badly of capitalism, for reasons such as: leading to wealth inequality, increasing poverty, bad working conditions, etc. For these reasons, many people such as Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, Vladimir Lenin, and Che Guevara have developed their own ideologies such as communism.
