Around 300 B.C.E in the late formative period the Mayas developed one of the first forms of hieroglyphics. But what exactly is it? When you think of hieroglyphics, you would associate it with the Egyptians. However, the Mayas developed their own form of hieroglyphics. The Mayas developed a very complex system of writing. Using both phonetic(sounds) and hieroglyphic(symbols representing sounds, objects, or people) components. During the time when their hieroglyphics was being formed, the Maya civilization was experiencing a shift from an agricultural society to a more complex and advanced society. This overall lead to their development of hieroglyphics.
The Mayas used many different objects to put their hieroglyphics on. They used stelae which are stone slabs, sculptures, pottery, stone lintels, codices, and the very few of the surviving books the Maya people had.

Maya Hieroglyphics was an incredibly complex system. Ranging from over 800 characters. In the 1950s a linguist named Yury Knorozov demonstrated the use of phonetic components alongside its pictorial style of hieroglyphics.
Even with the complexity of hieroglyphics, the Maya civilization used it to record their history and culture. Throughout the several centuries that Mayas used hieroglyphics they recorded many important events, traditions, and important people. The city of Bonampak recorded much with the Maya hieroglyphics. They used stelae, sculptures, stone lintels, and other objects to record events in the lives of Maya rulers and their families. History, people, traditions, and culture were all able to be written down with the creation of hieroglyphics.
The Maya's form of hieroglyphics was the only true writing system in the pre-columbian americas. This alone gave the people of Maya an advantage. Information was given out much quicker and people had effective ways to communicate from large distances.
