Our colleagues from OBIB, the umbrella organisation for Brussels Dutch-language libraries, organised a parallel session in the morning for an additional group of Dutch guests on working with low-literated adults in a library and the Bookstart project.

The Dutch-language Brussels libraries have been successfully experimenting with different forms of multilingual reading and elaborating collections in other languages. Reader Saliha read us a story in Turkish and explained us the principles of the Salto-project. Librarian Eefje of the Sint-Joost library explained more about the multilingual collection.

The cross-sector project Open the Door for Reading aims to inspire young families, with a focus on socially vulnerable families, to engage with books and stories themselves at home. Linguistic interaction, storytelling fun and working from the strengths of families are central to this.

Visit to the House of the Child Anderlecht, a collaboration between organisations helping parents from pregnancy onwards with childcare, healthcare, leisure offerings, parenting support, workshops and much more.

Ludo from Bredeschool told us more about the principle of a broad school and how parents from the neighbourhood are involved in the activities. He also demonstrated some fun, wordless but yet language-stimulating methodologies from his play case.

Ligo Brusselleer discovered the gripping documentary "Leading Lights / Les Eclaireuses" about "La Petite Ecole", an experimental school in Brussels that aims to prepare children who have no school experience for real school. We showed the short version of this documentary including panel discussion for a wider audience from the education domain.

As we reached the middle of our collaboration, it was time for a mid-term reflection and evaluation. Where do we stand? What have we learned? What are we still missing? Are we meeting the objectives of the project and are there any common threads throughout our exchanges?
