During the spring quarantine I combined lunch with a lengthier book. Leaving my phone [a.k.a.distractions] in another room, I read 1-2 chapters each day and placed some significant texts onto my "read during quarantine 2020" list.

I even received a response from Queen Elizabeth----OK, Yes, it is from one of her ladies in waiting, but it's still pretty cool.

Adam and the invasion of the Vampire Goblins

by Adam Hoffman

It was an ordinary winter night. The full moon was shining brightly in the night sky, a cold breeze was sweeping through the street. Mason was taking a late night walk on his dark street. The street was completely deserted, like it would be at 8pm on a winter day. He was coming up on the woods on his left. He suddenly heard footsteps. He frantically looked around to see where the footsteps were coming from.

“Who is there?” Mason asked. He heard the footsteps closer now. He peeked into the woods and saw a goblin coming into his direction. Before he could take a breath he began running in the opposite direction; he could hear the footsteps running now. He didn’t dare look back. He got so worried that he looked back anyway; in the darkness, the goblin was on his heels now. Mason began running at full speed. He was running so fast that he didn’t see that a stick was right in front of him; he stepped on the stick then fell. His bare arms and legs hit the ground. He tried to get up but he was too late; the goblin grabbed his legs and began dragging him backwards.

“Where are you taking me? Let me go” Mason told the goblin. The goblin ignored him and continued dragging him. Mason tried to turn around to get his legs free but couldn’t reach that far. He looked behind him quick enough to see the goblin drag his legs into the woods; he began to squirm harder. The goblin stopped dragging him and held his legs in place.

“What do you want with me?” Mason asked the goblin. He looked around and saw more goblins coming toward. He tried squirming again but it didn’t do anything for him. Mason looked at one of the goblins and saw two long fangs in the front of its mouth. He suddenly realized that these weren’t any ordinary goblins; they were vampire goblins.

“Somebody! Anybody help me! These vampires want to drink my blood!” Mason cried. The vampire goblins were much closer now; he put his free hands over his neck.

“Please anybody help! These vampires are gonna make a blood drink out of Me!” Mason cried again. Nobody came; the vampires were inches away. Mason put his hands flat on the ground; the vampires began to drink his blood. He cried out in pain; he began to feel like he was going to pass out. His vision began to get blurry; he could faintly see the vampires draining his blood. The vampires rapidly drank the blood. Mason began to hear some voices.

“Get Mason to safety, I will fight them off” Adam said to Ava. Mason faintly saw a big shadow pounce on the feasting vampires then someone get him to his feet again. He was blindly guided out of the woods. A few minutes later he was shaken awake by someone.

“Wake up” Ava instructed. Mason got to his feet and saw clearly now.

“Thank goodness you're awake, I was worried you were going to pass out ” Ava said.

“Do I have fangs yet? Did the vampires run away?” Mason asked. Ava looked in his mouth.

“You don’t appear to have any fangs. And no, Adam is dealing with the vampires right now” Ava said. A few minutes later Adam came out of the woods, his werewolf fur had multiple vampire bites in it.

“Are you okay? It looks like they bit you a lot” Ava asked.

“I’m fine, these bites don’t hurt me that much” Adam replied.

“Thanks for saving me. Without you two I would have been in trouble” Mason told them.

“It was no problem at all. Thankfully it was a full moon tonight so I was able to transform into a werewolf” Adam replied.

“And thankfully Adam had super great hearing so he could clearly hear your cries for help and the vampires drinking noises” Ava added.

“What did you do with the vampires?” Ava asked Adam.

“I knocked them out then threw them further into the woods with my super strength” Adam replied. He looked behind him and saw more vampires come out of the woods.

“We need to get out of here right now” Adam told the others.

“Get on my back. I will help bring you to safety” Adam told Mason. Mason jumped on Adam’s back; They began running with the vampires on their tails.

“Why are they after us again?” Mason asked.

“When a vampire gets a taste of someone's blood they don’t give up until they get all of it. Since they managed to get blood out of you, they will be ruthless for your blood unfortunately” Adam explained to Mason. They passed by Mason’s house.

“Why did you not drop me off at my house?” Mason asked.

“As I said, they are ruthless for your blood now that they got a taste of it. They are ruthless enough to break your window and drink your blood while you are sleeping without you even knowing” Adam replied. Mason began to imagine what would have happened if he hadn’t taken the advice. He entered his house and locked the door behind him. He went up the stairs to his bedroom and changed up for bed; he locked the window then went to sleep. He heard some glass break but still stayed asleep. The vampires took the covers off him and began to drink the remaining blood. They drank all his blood then flew off satisfied. Mason awoke the next. Suddenly he gasped. His skin was super pale.

“Oh no. don’t tell me they came back” Mason said. He got up and pulled back his shirt sleeve; his arm was also super pale.

“Oh no, I’m one of them now” Mason said worriedly. He stopped imagining it; the vampires got closer.

“They are getting closer. We need to create some distance” Ava told Adam. Adam looked ahead and saw a big tree.

“Turn toward the tree. They won’t be able to reach us up there” Adam said. They turned toward the tree. They began to climb the tree; Mason fell to the ground.

“We need to rescue him quickly, he fell off you” Ava said. The vampires began approaching the tree; Adam began reaching his hand out for Mason to grab onto. He tried to grab his hand but it was too high to reach.

“Grab onto my hand, I will get you to safety” Adam said.

“I’m trying but I can’t reach it” Mason replied. The vampires began sprinting. Adam had to act fast; he extended his hand down as low as possible. The vampires were much closer now.

“Hurry, they are getting closer” Ava said. Mason managed to reach his hand; Adam began bringing Mason up. Suddenly the vampires grabbed Mason’s legs and began sucking out more blood; Adam began pulling harder. He saw Mason’s tan skin turn a little pale; he did one last strong pull. Mason was brought toward the tree branch; some of the vampires were still drinking his blood. Adam threw the vampires off his friend; Mason got onto the branch. The vampires kept trying to grab him again.

“Are you okay?” Adam asked Mason. Mason nodded. They climbed higher up the tree.

“How are we gonna lose them?” Mason asked.

“We can’t lose them permanently but we can outrun them if we get far enough ahead” Adam explained.

“I say we get out the other side of the tree and run that way” Ava suggested. They jumped out of the other side of the tree and ran. After running for a few minutes, Ava noticed that blood was leaking out of a bite on Mason’s leg.

“We need to get him to a hospital quickly” Ava told Adam.

“Why is that?” Adam asked.

“One of the bite marks is leaking blood out from his leg” Ava explained.

“We need to move quickly” Adam told Ava. They picked up speed and searched for a hospital. They eventually found a hospital; they began to approach the hospital when Adam felt nothing on his back. He looked around frantically and saw the vampires take Mason around a corner. They ran after the vampires; mid way Adam heard the drinking sound again. They ran quicker; they came to see the vampires again drinking his blood; the tan skin was even more pale now. The vampires stopped drinking and spotted them; they ran away, occasionally getting a drink of blood from time to time. Adam and Ava ran after them. They caught up with them and rescued Mason. They quickly escorted him to the hospital; the bite was still leaking blood. They came up to the door and gasped.

“How can a hospital be closed?” Ava asked.

“I don’t know but we gotta get in there” Adam replied. He tried the door; surprisingly it opened. They walked through the dark hospital.

“You stay here with him while I find some bandages to stop the blood from leaking” Adam told Ava. Adam went off; Ava guided Mason to a chair and sat next to him.

“Don’t worry, Adam is getting bandages for you right now” Ava said. A few minutes later Adam returned with some bandages; he wrapped them around the bitten area.

“We should probably stay here while his blood comes back to him” Ava said.

“I will go get us some food to eat while we are waiting. Are you guys hungry?” Adam asked.

“Yes. Get all of us something to eat” Ava said.

“Alright I will go get us some food. Make sure the doors are locked while I’m gone” Adam replied. He exited the building. Ava locked the doors and sat back down. Adam looked around for vampires. He didn’t see any then ran. He found a steakhouse and decided to get food from there. He entered the restaurant and walked up to the counter.

“Welcome to the steakhouse. Do you need some time to look over the menu?” the employee asked.

“Yes I need only a few minutes to decide” Adam said.

“Okay, take your time” the employee behind the counter replied. Adam looked over the menu then decided what he wanted.

“May I have 3 well done ribeye steaks please?” Adam asked.

“Of course, sir. They will be out when they are finished” The employee told him. The employee told the people in the kitchen the order and they started on it. Adam waited at the pick up area of the counter. 10 minutes later an employee put a bag at the pickup area.

“Here is your order sir. Have a good night and enjoy the food” the employee said.

“How much do I owe?” Adam asked.

“We serve werewolves free food here. So you don’t owe a penny” the employee explained.

“Okay. thanks” Adam replied. He took the bag and left. He looked around for any vampires. He still didn’t see any then ran. Adam made it back to the hospital; Ava opened the door for him. Adam entered and locked the door behind him.

“What did you get?” Ava asked.

“I got us some ribeye steaks from the steakhouse. I hope that is fine” Adam said.

“Those are fine” Ava replied.

“How is Mason doing?” Adam asked.

“He is doing much better. A lot of his blood came back to him” Ava said.

“That’s good news” Adam replied. He gave his friends their steaks and silverware. They sat down and started eating. Adam threw the whole steak in his mouth and chewed it aggressively. He finished his steak. The others cut their steak and ate it one piece at a time. Everyone finished their steaks.

“When am I safe to go home?” Mason asked.

“You will be safe after the sun goes up” Adam said.

“When is that?” Mason asked.

“The sun should go up around 12 am” Adam replied.

“That means we have an hour til the sun goes up” Ava said. They decided to sit down for the time being. Ava and Mason fell asleep; Adam stayed awake. He suddenly heard someone or something trying to break down the front door. Adam walked over to check out what was trying to break down the door. He stood in front of the door.

“Guys, wake up. They are back” Adam told them. They woke up.

“Hide quickly. I will deal with them” Adam said. Ava and Mason hid while Adam went outside to deal with the vampires.

“We know that you are hiding him from us and are warning you that you will be sorry for doing it” one of the vampires told Adam. The vampires flew at him. Adam dodged and bit one of them. They flew back toward him and pounced on him. They bit him. Adam shook around viciously and threw one of them at a nearby tree. The remaining vampires continued biting. He scratched two of them with his claws then slapped them, making them hit a building. He picked up the last one and began viciously biting, scratching and stomping it. The vampire stopped moving and laid down on the ground. One of the other vampires flew over attempting to catch him off guard. Thanks to his enhanced senses, he was able to detect the vampire and ruin it’s surprise attack. Adam scratched the vampire; the vampire got weak. Adam finished the weakened vampire with a hard kick to the head. The other two vampires flew at him. Adam jumped and slashed at one of them; the vampire fell to the ground. The last vampire managed to bite Adam on the shoulder; he got angry and howled. He then ran furiously over and began attacking the last vampire. The vampire managed to get out of his attacks of fury and kick him in the chest. Adam took the blow then grabbed the vampire by his throat. He held the vampire against a building; the vampire tried getting his throat free but struggled against Adam’s superhuman strength. Adam slashed the vampire right across the chest. The vampire fell down and tried to stand up. He watched as the vampire crawled forward, holding his chest. After a few seconds the vampire fell forward and died.

“That’s what you get for drinking my friend’s blood” Adam said. He walked away toward the hospital. He entered the hospital.

“Is it safe for us to come out yet?” Ava asked.

“Yes you two are safe to come out now?” Adam said. Ava and Mason came out of hiding and gasped.

“You look hurt. Are you okay?” Mason asked, concerned.

“Yes of course I’m okay. Why are you so worried?” Adam asked.

“It is just that you have so many bites and scratches on you” Ava said.

“Trust me, those vampires hurt a lot more from my scratches and bites than vice versa” Adam assured them.

“Are we safe to leave now?” Mason asked.

“Yes we are safe to bring you home now” Adam replied. They left the hospital. Mason and Ava saw the motionless vampires on the ground.

“You must have put up a tough fight to knock them all out” Mason said.

“It isn’t so hard when you have superhuman strength, superhuman speed, enhanced reflexes, enhanced senses and superhuman jumping abilities” Adam replied. They brought Mason back home.

“Thanks again for saving me” Mason told them gratefully.

“Of course. That is what friends do, help each other” Ava said.

“Have a good vampire-free night” Adam told Mason.

“Also if you ever go on a night time walk again, call me to see if I’m in the area. Make sure to do this because you never know if you will be attacked by anymore vampires or night monsters. If I come with you on these night time walks then I can keep you safe ” Adam added.

“Alright. I will be sure to do that” Mason said. Mason went into his house. Ava and Adam walked toward their street.

“That was a crazy night” Ava said.

“I agree. Tonight sure was crazy” Adam replied. They got to Ava’s house.

“Have a good night” Adam told her.

“You too” Ava replied. She entered her house. Adam went home after a crazy, action-filled night.
