Helping Your Child

We encourage extending the expected behaviors in school by supporting them at home. Here are some suggestions on how you can support your child.

How YOU Can Help your Child

  • Give them more responsibilities (chores) at home; helps to build confidence.
  • Encourage independence. Let them “be in charge” of their things. Example: Let them put snack and or lunch in backpack.
  • Give multi-step directions as often as possible.
  • Praise them for listening and following directions.
  • Raise expectations for independence and responsibility.
  • If they forget things at home, let them take responsibility.
  • Read to and with your child. Talk about books.
  • Play card, dice or board games
  • Spend less time with screens and more time together.
  • View mistakes as learning opportunities.
  • Plan and prepare meals together.
  • Encourage them to take risks.

QUESTIONS TO ASK:

  • Tell me about the best part of your day.
  • Can you tell me something you learned (or did) today?
  • What was the hardest thing you had to do today?
  • Did you make any mistakes that helped you learn?
  • Were you a good listener? Did you follow directions?
  • Where did you sit? With whom?
  • Tell me about what you read in class.
  • Who did you play with today? What did you play?
  • Are you pushing yourself to do your best? How?
  • How was your integrity in class today?
