The Role of a School Counselor
Coggin Elementary counselors plan and implement a comprehensive school counseling program aligned with the Texas Model that is a key component of the school's overall mission to promote student achievement in academic, career, and social/emotional development. The program is a collaborative framework that includes students, parents, teachers, administrators, and community stakeholders.
Advocacy
As school counselors, we advocated for our program through the District Advisory Counsel, and this year, we were able to establish greater program autonomy. Our principals have worked together to empower us to structure the program more succinctly to the model and create an intentional transition plan between 6th grade and middle school campuses, to better prepare our students for Brownwood Middle School.
Additional Advocacy *Attention CREST Judges*
With great respect to the CREST judges, Brownwood ISD is a small district (smaller than any identified CREST award winner in the past several years), and we have had the great honor of building our program as a unit districtwide with great support from our Board of Trustees. We strive to be horizontally and vertically aligned due to the nature of how our district flows together. Respectfully, we ask that you consider us as all of us or none of us for the prestigious CREST award. We welcome feedback, and we are so open to growth. We have wholeheartedly entered this appraisal process as a district-wide team (as we do everything), and our applications look as such. We respect the parameters of entering as campuses and hope that we have each represented our individual campus “flavor”, as we are not the same in feel, but we are the same in goals. It is not our intention to create competition or struggle within our growing and changing district, so we ask to stand united in our efforts. Our children and teens will succeed, and we will do everything in our power to make that happen. We are grateful for your guidance as to how we may build. Thank you.
