Math Circle is a chance to engage with local high school students through weekly math games and activities, introducing them to the cool math behind them.
SUMS is a mathematics symposium organized by undergraduates in the math department and held in Spring every year. The topic is different each year, and is pitched and decided by the organizers at the start of the academic year. Check out the SUMS website! SUMS 2025 happened on March 15th, 2025, with the theme Math and Music, and was a huge success! Stay tuned for information about SUMS 2026!
The Putnam competition is the leading math competition for undergraduate students in the United States. The Putnam seminar is co-organized by Eric Larson and Jeremy Kahn, with the first meeting at Barus & Holley 161 on Monday, September 30th, at 6pm.
Semester Directed Reading Program
Any undergraduate who has taken at least one course with mathematical proofs is eligible to apply for the DRP. We encourage anyone who is interested in learning more about math - whether it’s a specific topic or just wanting to know how mathematicians think - to apply to the DRP. We do not care if you are going to pursue math in the future or not. We do want you to be committed to the program for the whole semester. Since a typical student spends around 4 hours a week on the DRP, if you are taking a heavy course load, please ask yourself before applying if you have the time and energy for an extra project.
Summer Directed Reading Program
The Summer DRP will take place June 23--August 15 on campus. Each undergrad will be paired with a graduate student mentor for an independent reading project. The DRP is mostly intended for math concentrators who want to further explore their interest in math, who might be interested in graduate school, and who have not already had a research opportunity. Everyone is encouraged to apply. Apply by April 4th!
