My name is Marie-Anne Barrón and I'm an English MAT student from Katy, Texas. I have been away from the heat and the hurricanes for four years now while completing my undergraduate education at Brown, from which I graduated in May 2022 with a Bachelor of Arts in Education Studies. I came back for my fifth year to complete the MAT program and learn about teaching for justice in the English classroom.
I have worked in Education in some capacity since I was sixteen years old, working as a teacher's assistant in pre-kindergarten and kindergarten summer schools, assisting students with their English and math skills. I knew I loved working with students and helping them have light bulb moments since this job, and now, having had experience with both middle and high schoolers, I can say with certainty that my favorite part of teaching is watching students grow throughout our time together. When they're in a supportive classroom environment, they become not only stronger at the skills we teach them, but more confident and empowered. I believe that the role of education is to give students both autonomy and ability, because our students are our future.
My favorite part of living in the smallest state in the US is getting to know the people and the community here. I still laugh when people here tell me a twenty minute drive is far or when I remember the first time I saw flowers grow on trees. What I miss the most about my hometown is driving down the highways with my music up, driving forty minutes for a nice burger.
