roadmap: applying for internships in the arts
Additional Resume Information:
Make sure to tailor your resume to EACH application. This might seem tedious, but employers will appreciate the additional effort. Also, you might want to include that you are proficient (note: “proficient” NOT “fluent”) in certain languages depending on the location of your potential internship (also bring this up in interviews).
Certificates DO matter! If you have previously attended a summer program, or taken an online course relevant to your chosen internship, and have received a certificate of completion, you should include this on your application. You may lack hands-on, real-world experience in your chosen field, and a certificate signals to a potential employer that you are not only driven but someone who could add value to them regardless of your experience level.
Include links to your work! A resume is meant to be CONCISE, which means that the entire story of your application won’t be told on one page. Utilize links to websites, online portfolios (this might be especially important for architecture students), or even social media profiles to your advantage by enticing the reader with links throughout your resume to break up the monotony/litany of text. But make sure if you are including a Google Drive link that you change the share setting to “anyone with the link” can view, so that an employer outside of your organization can view your work.
In terms of the resume design, keep it SIMPLE, but also, don’t be afraid to go BOLD. The majority of your resume should consist of black text, but using an accent color for the headings or even certain links makes the entire resume more cohesive and keeps the reader’s eyes engaged with your application. Beware of filtering software that might flag your resume before human eyes see it. Here are some tips to get your resume past AI.
Allocate more space to EXPERIENCE rather than educational accomplishments. Your potential employer already knows you are a Brown student and all of the rigor that comes with that title. Now, they want to know what you have DONE and will continue to DO with that education and how you will make an impact on the world.
