Concentrations
Concentrations
The Department of the History of Art and Architecture (HIAA) at Brown University is committed to the ongoing study of art, architecture, and material culture. This department contains two different concentration programs, Architecture and the History of Art and Architecture.
Emphasis is placed on technical training, allowing students to develop a broad understanding of the concepts and methods for the planning and design of buildings, landscapes, and cities. Students will acquire skills in sketching, drafting, model-making, and digital rendering, alongside problem-solving, critical analysis and careful observation of the global built environment.
The History of Art & Architecture
Students are trained in the techniques of close-looking, visual description and interpretation, and critical analysis that are necessary to locate the work of art in history. In addition to exposure to a wide array of social, intellectual, material, and technical forces within the art world, courses will interrogate the diverse histories of art-making and the embodied labor of artists throughout history.
