The GSC operates three mailing lists (formerly known as the “listservs”, but have now changed to Google Groups) intended solely for the graduate student community of Brown University. Undergraduates, postdocs and visiting scholars may be granted access to the listservs at the discretion of the GSC Chair of Technology.
The Listservs were decommissioned on July 17, 2026. The Office of Information Technology (OIT) retired the legacy Listserv service and all listservs were transitioned to Google Groups. See instructions below on how to use the new platform.
Here is what you need to know:
All list members will be automatically imported to the corresponding Google Group.
Existing owners will be given Google Group manager permissions on the group.
The address will change, replacing @listserv.brown.edu with @group.brown.edu.

You can view general guidance about using Google Groups from this Google Support guide.
GSNOTICE is a list for events or important announcements only, and these events generally must be Brown affiliated in some sort of official capacity. Events organized by recognized student groups fall under this heading.
GSBB is a list for (loosely speaking) “bulletin board” like announcements. This includes sale items, apartment listings, roommate searches, posts by people looking for tennis partners or rides to the airport, questions about the community, opinions about local services (mechanics, dentists), grad-student protocol related questions (e.g. Where do I pick up form X? Does Brown health insurance cover Y?), etc.
GSC-MASTERS is a mailing list designed to provide a forum for Master’s students to share ideas and knowledge with each other, and to discuss issues, questions and concerns relevant to Master’s students. It will also be used by the Master’s Advocate to communicate announcements specifically pertinent to Master’s students at Brown.
GS-TRAVEL is a mailing list designed to cater specifically to travel requests, concerns, ride shares, and carpools. We believe this platform will be invaluable in helping students access all travel-related information within our graduate community.
Please read and follow these instructions carefully, especially if trying to subscribe from a non-Brown.edu email address.
Only Brown.edu affiliated email addresses may subscribe to GSNOTICE, GSC-MASTERS, and GS-TRAVEL. If you are an incoming student without a brown.edu address or a risd student and would like to request to be added to GSBB, use this link to find the GSBB-L google group AND email the Chair of Technology at the same time that you request to subscribe. Include your full name and your department. Please be advised that it can take up to 3 business days for your request to be reviewed to subscribe.
Send a blank email (leave subject and body of email blank) to the mailing list that you would like to join:
Alternatively, you can login to Google Groups, go to "All Groups" and search the full name of the group you would like to join (ex. gsnotice-l@group.brown.edu), and when the group appears on the page, select the Join Group icon on the far right-hand side of the listed group (the symbol looks like an arrow pointing to the right with a closed bracket). The other option is to directly click on the Google Group you would like to join and then on the top menu bar select "Join Group" or "Ask to Join Group" depending on the group.
You will receive a welcome/confirmation email when your subscription request is approved, after which time you can post to the list from your subscribed email address. Regular subscriptions (the default option) receive each message individually as an email; Digest sends one email per day with all the messages from that day; Abridged sends short summaries of messages combined into one email (up to 150 recent messages) per day.
Distribution of the mailing lists follows a “one-to-many” model:
A single sender submits a message to a group and the message is distributed to all members subscribed to the group.
Instructions:
Login to Google Groups with the email that is subscribed to the GSC Group.
On the bottom left-hand side of the Google Groups home page, select the "My Membership Settings" tab.
Under "Subscription", you can choose how you would like to receive emails from the group. The options are: Each Email, Digest, Abridged, and No Email. Select No Email to never receive emails from a particular mailing list. This still allows you to be subscribed to the list and you can change this setting any time.
Alternatively, you can stop the Google Groups from showing up in your gmail inbox by using the Skip inbox via Gmail filter. To do this, first, go to your gmail and click the search bar options icon on the right side, then type the exact Google Group's gmail address in the "From" field, and then click "Create filter" at the bottom of the search box. Now, you can check the box "Skip the Inbox (Archive it)", then check the box "Apply the label" if you still want to find/access the messages at a later time in a specific folder, and lastly click "Create filter".
To make a label: select the drop-down (it's next to the box when you selected the option "Apply the label") that says “Choose label…” and click the option that says “New label…”. Now give your new label/folder a name, for example, “GSBB”. Now all the grad mailing list messages you receive will get filed away automatically.
Depending on which option you select from above, you will either not receive mail from that GSC Google Group or those messages will be redirected to your custom folder rather than your Inbox, and you can open the folder (by clicking on its name on the left side of the screen) at any time to read messages at your leisure.
Alternatively, go into gmail settings and choose “Multiple Inboxes” to split your inbox view up, with the mailing list emails in a separate panel.
Our GSC Google Groups act just like regular email addresses. To send an email to all the subscribers of a list, just address the email to one of the following:
gsbb-l@group.brown.edu
gsnotice-l@group.brown.edu
gsc-masters@group.brown.edu
gs-travel@group.brown.edu
Keep in mind that the lists only accept posts from subscribed email addresses. Posts to GSBB-L, GSC-MASTERS, and GS-TRAVEL will be distributed immediately after you submit the email.
**GSNOTICE-L posts will require prior approval from the Chair of Technology prior to being distributed to subscribers. Please allow 2 business days for message requests to get approved and distributed. It is advised that if you are sending out time-sensitive posts (ie. for an application deadline, event date, etc...) that you submit the message at least 3 days prior to the date to allow sufficient time for it to be approved and seen by subscribers. If not, your post is subject to not be approved.**
To make any change to your mailing list subscription, you must log into Google Groups. One important thing to note is that the group only knows about email addresses, so the email address you log in with will be the only one for which you can make any changes. Be sure that you log in with the email address for which you’re signed up to the mailing list.
If you have a gmail, it’s easy to log in:
Go to the login page. Once you're on the email page, select the Google apps (looks like a 3x3 grid of dots) on the top right of the page and there will be a drop-down list of all the different applications. Select the one called "Groups" and you will enter the Google Groups home page under your login.
If you don't have a gmail account (only applies for GSBB-L group), you will need to link your non-Gmail address to a Google account by doing the following:
Then select "Use my current email address instead".
Now you can log in using Google Groups.
If you’ve forgotten your password, you can follow the directions for creating a password. This will change your password from the one you forgot to whatever new one you choose.
You can change your mailing list settings (including the email address where you receive list emails, your digest preferences, and so forth) through the Google Groups web application as follows:
The first step is to login to Google Groups. Remember to log in with the email address with which you’re currently subscribed to the mailing list.
Click on "My Groups" to scroll or search the GSC group that you are subscribed to and select the specific group that you would like to edit your setting to.
For each list for which you want to change your settings, click on “My Membership Settings” towards the bottom left-hand side of the page, make the change you want, and click the button labeled “Save Changes”.
Send a blank email (leave subject and body of email blank) to the mailing list that you would like to leave:
Alternatively, you can login to Google Groups, go to "My Groups" and select the group that you would like to leave, and then go to "My Membership Settings". At the very top of the page, next to the name of the group, you can click the “Leave Group” button. Then click "Yes, leave group" to confirm.
If you tried all these steps and you still can’t unsubscribe, email the Chair of Technology and they will walk you through the steps.
Tailor your membership
Are certain groups’ notices not relevant to you, but you want to stay subscribed to the list? You can always create an email filter that skips the inbox or sends to trash, alternatively, you can change your subscriber settings to No Email under "My Membership Settings" for a particular group.
Yes! You can send images, PDFs and Word documents (.doc and .docx), provided the total size of your attachments including text and files are less than 25MB.
However, it is recommended that you instead attach a link to Google Drive (doc, sheet, or slide) so that you can update it to reflect changes. You can click the Google Drive “Share” button, and under “Get Link” you can change the view settings to “Anyone within Brown University can view” for additional security.
