Commentary:
I became inspired to work on a story about MLB’s newly implemented rules right around Opening Day in March, when I started realizing the depths of the opinions arising in conversations with friends and family. I decided to do it as an audio story primarily as a change of pace and to get more experience with the medium. The biggest difficulty this project faced was the logistics. Originally, my idea was to bring together all members of the then seven-to-nine person panel of Brown community members for a single in-person meeting, but as members dropped and conflicts arose I soon realized this was impractical. Hence, I ended up interviewing a reduced number of people, some of whom were not directly related to Brown, but I still feel I was able to preserve the spirit of my original idea and, most importantly, was still able to reflect a diversity of opinions in the final panel. A close second-biggest difficulty was music, specifically the decision of when or when not to use it. I hope listeners find any combination of my organ and piano playing or instrumental compositions a welcome complement and not distraction from the content!
