Thomas Martin | thomas_martin@brown.edu
Tom Martin is a second-year medical student at Brown University and a paramedic for Brown EMS as well as the Towns of South Kingstown and Cumberland. He has worked in 911 EMS for almost 7 years between RI and NJ, where he grew up volunteering as an EMT on the Jersey Shore. He enjoys teaching both EMT and paramedic students and likes to keep material simple and engaging. He is always happy to discuss Fire/EMS, ocean rescue, research studies, or whatever else you might like. You’ll have him for your Torso trauma lecture at the end of June (appropriate, since his research focuses on trauma patients, specifically rib fractures!).
Brendan McStay | bmac161@gmail.com
Brendan currently works as a Firefighter/Paramedic for the North Kingstown, RI Fire Department. After serving a four-year sentence in the private ambulance industry as an EMT and EMT-Cardiac, Brendan became an ALS Supervisor at Brown EMS in 2007, ultimately leaving just barely into 2018 as Assistant Service Chief. For most of that time, he also volunteered with Warren Rescue, serving 4 years as Lieutenant, as well as a volunteer firefighter with the Tower company. Brendan has taught EMT and Cardiac classes outside of Brown as well as for BEMS, and enjoys helping nervous noobs become competent providers. Hopefully, by the time his Abdominal Emergencies presentation is over, you too will be well on your way. When not working, Brendan does his best to make sure that his two kids, Tommy (6) and Erin (3) manage to not kill themselves or each other, and hopefully maintain he and his wife Kate's sanity along the way.
Kris Wetterland | kris_wetterland@brown.edu
I come from the small Town of Warren, RI where I started my career on the Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department in 2010. I started out as a Firefighter and first responder riding Engine 1, Special Hazards and after a short time I started working on the Rescue as a driver. It didn't take long until I became passionate about EMS. I became an EMT in 2011 and then an AEMT Cardiac in 2012. Soon after becoming an EMT, I began working part time for Alert Ambulance / Paramedic Systems and then at Brown University as an ALS Supervisor in 2014. I attended undergraduate at Rhode Island College where I received a B.S. in Computer Information Systems, and have since received a M.S in Information Technology from Southern New Hampshire University. When I am not working on an Ambulance I work full time for Fidelity Investments as an Agile Coach for a cloud solutions delivery team, and am an adjunct professor at Rhode Island College. In 2017 I moved to Bristol, RI and have since joined the Bristol Volunteer Fire Department as a Firefighter and EMT. EMS has become not only a job but a passion for me . I enjoy being able to give back to the communities of Bristol RI and Brown University and cherish the opportunities I have to assist people in some of their worst times, and to also help educate more junior EMTs to be the best they can be.
When I am not working or teaching I spend my time enjoying my wonderful home in Bristol RI with my beautiful wife Renee. I look forward to working with all EMT students this summer. If you have any questions for me or if I can assist you in any way to understand the material you are studying do not hesitate to reach out to me via email. See you in class!
