Units of Study

Brooklyn Public Schools uses the EngageNY (www.engageny.org) curriculum for Grade 8 Mathematics. Classes will focus on the Connecticut Common Core Grade 8 Mathematics Standards, as well as Mathematical Practice Standards. These standards will be evaluated on the SBAC test during May 2021. Mathematics instruction at Brooklyn Middle School will explore the standards and practice standards in a manner that promotes student inquiry.

"Eighth grade mathematics is about (1) formulating and reasoning about expressions and equations, including modeling an association in bivariate data with a linear equation, and solving linear equations and systems of linear equations; (2) grasping the concept of a function and using functions to describe quantitative relationships; (3) analyzing two- and three-dimensional space and figures using distance, angle, similarity, and congruence, and understanding and applying the Pythagorean Theorem." (from EngageNY, A Story of Rations Curriculum Overview)

  • Unit 1: Integer Exponents and Scientific Notation

  • Unit 2: The Concept of Congruence

  • Unit 3: Similarity

  • Unit 4: Linear Equations

  • Unit 5: Examples of Functions from Geometry

  • Unit 6: Linear Functions

  • Unit 7: Introduction to Irrational Numbers Using Geometry

Weekly Skills Practice

As students venture deeper into their understanding of Number Systems, Geometry, Expressions and Equations, and Functions, it will be crucial to maintain their foundational addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division skills with whole numbers, integers, decimals, and fractions.

A weekly skills practice sheet will be assigned each Monday and due the following Monday. (In the case that there is no school on a Monday, due dates will be adjusted.) Students will be expected to show their work for all problems (NO CALCULATORS!) following a specified format.

For the 2020-2021 school year, students who complete the weekly skills practice will earn extra points toward their quiz scores.
