What are high frequency words and which ones does my child need to know?

High-frequency words are the most commonly used words in printed text. Over 50 percent of all text is composed of them. Because many are phonetically irregular, tend to be abstract, have limited visual correspondence, or even easily understood definitions, students must memorize them to read quickly and fluently.

The expectation at the end of kindergarten is for students to master the first 50 high frequency words.


The expectation for the end of first grade is for students to master 150 high frequency words. This total includes the 50 that should be mastered by the end of kindergarten.
