The Faculty of TDE welcomes a number of academics from outside Brookes each year to collaborate with and enrich the work of the Faculty. There are three types of visitors:
Faculty Awarded Titles
Visiting Research Academic - This title is granted by the Faculty through the Research and Knowledge Exchange Committee to enable individuals to visit the Faculty to undertake research with academic staff. These visitors may be based in academic or non-academic institutions. They may be either invited by the Faculty to collaborate in an area of research for a specific strategic purpose as approved by Faculty RKEC, or they may wish to visit the Faculty for the purpose of pursuing their own external research whilst also collaborating with their host academic.
Applications for Visiting Research Academics are considered by the Faculty RKEC at the quarterly committee meetings, or exceptionally as Chair’s actions if urgent.
Most visitors to the Faculty come as Visiting Research Academics. A bench fee of £4,000 per annum on a pro rata basis is normally charged. If this bench fee is to be waived, the academic will be expected to make an equivalent in-kind contribution. For visits of less than one month, no fee is charged.
For individuals based in academic or non-academic institutions invited by the Faculty to collaborate in an area of research for a specific strategic purpose as approved by Faculty RKEC, no fee is charged.
Visiting Industry Fellow - This title is granted by the Faculty through the Research and Knowledge Exchange Committee to experienced entrepreneurs or professionals (usually with a pre-existing relationship with OBU) to take up a visiting role in TDE with a view to supporting research, teaching, or knowledge exchange activities. It is expected that Visiting Industry Fellows commit to supporting our mission and vision, and that they are willing to engage with staff and students. This honorary, un-salaried role aims to: Formalise collaborations with individuals who make an outstanding contribution to the Faculty’s development; grow engagement with, and exchanges between staff and students, industry, and policy; and support knowledge exchange activities, with VIFellows expected to actively participate in seminars, skills building workshops, or to offer specialist lectures where appropriate.
Applications for Visiting Industry Fellows are considered by the Faculty RKEC at the quarterly committee meetings, or exceptionally as Chair’s actions if urgent.
University Awarded Titles
Visiting Fellow - This title is granted by the University to a person who has demonstrated distinction in areas relevant to the mission and work of the University. The title will be awarded for a maximum of three years and can be renewed. The appointment lapses with the termination of the connection.
Visiting Fellow nominations require approval by Faculty RKEC before being passed to the University RKEC for approval. The final decision rests with the University RKEC. Applications may exceptionally be approved on Chair’s action by the Pro Vice-chancellor, Research & Global Partnerships. Appointments will normally be for a maximum period of 3 years and nominations should provide a clear and detailed explanation of the contribution that the Fellow will make to the University, if appointed. Letters are issued by the Secretary of the University Research and Knowledge Exchange Committee.
Visiting Professor – This title is granted to a distinguished person who satisfies the professorial appointment criteria and who undertakes a regular commitment to the University's activities. The title is awarded for a maximum of five years and can be renewed. The appointment lapses with the termination of the connection with the University. First considered by Faculty RKEC, and then at Faculty Executive Group. If the Dean is happy to support the application, he passes an endorsement for the application to The Senior Academic Promotions Committee, who make the final decision.
Visiting Professors and Visiting Fellows are non-stipendiary and are not employed by the University; they may, of course, receive expenses for travel and subsistence necessarily incurred in the course of carrying out functions for the University. The Associate Dean (Research and Knowledge Exchange) would be expected to approve such expense payments in accordance with the University's Financial Regulations.
