We use the CONVERIS system to manage and store details of research undertaken at Oxford Brookes University.
In order to be compliant with HEFCE Open Access requirements (based on eligibility for REF 2021), all publications need to be uploaded onto CONVERIS within three months of the publication date. However, as part of good practice, the University is encouraging all academics to upload their outputs within three months of the acceptance date. When uploading the final, accepted version of you publication, you also need to upload evidence of the acceptance date, such as an email/letter from the publisher.
Open Access fee Requests
Oxford Brookes holds an RCUK block grant that can be used to fund Article Processing Charges and Open Access fees, and is administered by the Scholarly Communications Team (openaccess@brookes.ac.uk): Open Access fee requests
Read and Publish Agreements
Oxford Brookes Library is signing a number of new ‘read & publish’ agreements with the scholarly publishers like Taylor & Francis, Sage, Wiley, and Cambridge University Press (see more, HERE)
These agreements give Oxford Brookes staff and students the usual ability to read the journals of the publisher, but also include a limited or unlimited ability for Oxford Brookes researchers to publish their articles as Gold Open Access.
To find out more about these agreements please see this webpage, HERE.

Open Access and (the next) REF
The next REF is certain to include an Open Access requirement, but we just don’t know what it will be yet. UK Research & Innovation (the umbrella organisation for research funding in the UK) had planned to release their new Open Access policy in late 2020 but, like many things, it has been delayed by the events of the COVID pandemic.
In the meantime, we’re asking researchers to continue to work with us to meet the REF 2021 Open Access requirements and Act on acceptance:
Add journal articles and conference proceedings articles to Converis as soon as the publisher confirms they are accepted for publication (see: HEFCE FAQs about the "Deposit on Acceptance" requirement).
Upload your Author’s Accepted Manuscript (See, Video and PDF guide: How to add outputs to CONVERIS / the CRIS for REF 2021)
Upload evidence of the acceptance date (e.g. a screenshot of the publisher’s email).
Detailed guides on the process are available from: HERE.
When the UKRI Open Access policy (or the next REF Open Access requirements) is announced, the Scholarly Communications Team will get in touch with guidance on what Oxford Brookes researchers should do.
For any questions on Open Access please contact the Scholarly Communications Team at openaccess@brookes.ac.uk.
ORCID provides a unique digital identifier that distinguishes you from every other researcher and, through integration in key research workflows such as manuscript and grant submission, supports automated linkages between you and your professional activities ensuring that your work is recognized.
When applying for Research Council grants, you need to have an ORCID ID, and HEFCE is encouraging all researchers that will be returned to the REF to have an ORCID ID. Getting an ORCID ID can be done quickly be clicking on this link and following the steps on the ORCID website. Please add your ORCID ID to your profile on CONVERIS by clicking on the "Edit" button next to your name.
