In late summer the Library signed a new and improved 'read & publish' agreement with Springer Nature, the details of which have only just been confirmed by Springer Nature. The new agreement means that Oxford Brookes researchers can publish articles as Gold Open Access in eligible Springer Nature journals without having to pay an Open Access Fee, and it includes journals from BMC, Palgrave, SpringerOpen, and the Nature Portfolio (e.g. Nature, Scientific Reports, and Nature Communications).

Springer Nature: improved 'read & publish' agreement
All institutions participating in this agreement share an annual ‘publish’ fund. When the publishing fund is in credit, all articles will be published Gold Open Access (on a first-come-first served basis) if the following requirements are met:
The journal is included in the agreement - you can download lists of participating Springer and Nature journals from this page
The type of article is an Original Paper (also referred to as Original Research, Original Article, or Research Paper), Review Paper, Brief Communication, or Continuing Education.
The corresponding author uses their Oxford Brookes email address and states their affiliation as Oxford Brookes.

At Oxford Brookes we have an Open Access policy which generally supports Open Access publication for all research outputs. We have an institutional repository, called RADAR (Research Archive and Digital Assets Repository), which is a key tool for sharing Oxford Brookes' Open Access research with researchers from other institutions and the general public.
Here is what we need you to do comply when you 'Act on Acceptance'
1. Add the basic information. Add information about the output to Converis (title, journal, authors, etc).
2. Upload the Author's Accepted Manuscript. You need to upload your journal article (Author's Accepted Manuscript) or conference proceedings as as soon as the publisher confirms that your output has definitely and unconditionally been accepted for publication. Please note that no files you upload to Converis will become Open Access until the Scholarly Communications team move them to RADAR, and we will always respect the publisher's Open Access policy in regard to access, licences, and embargoes.
3. Upload evidence of the date that the output was accepted. You need to upload evidence from the publisher that confirms that your output has definitely and unconditionally been accepted for publication (e.g. a screenshot of an email or pdf of letter).
4. Click 'Save and Close' (not 'Save') and choose 'For validation by library'. This is how the Scholarly Communications team are notified that an output is ready for checking).
5. Email Sylvester Andam (sandam@brookes.ac.uk) at the Research Office to let us know when you have a new publication accepted. This allows us to process this for REF purposes.
For more detail on the above please see the guide, in both PDF and video formats, called How to add outputs to Converis / the CRIS for REF 2021 .
By following the steps above as soon as the publisher tells you that your output will definitely be published you will give the Scholarly Communications team the best chance to help you and your research outputs be admissible to REF. If you wait too long to do this then we may miss the requirement to deposit the Author's Accepted Manuscript in RADAR . Publications must be submitted within.
Please also add any other research outputs to Converis that you would like to appear on your web profile or in your Converis CV. We would like to make as many of your research outputs Open Access as possible (e.g. books and book chapters) so please do upload your Author's Accepted Manuscripts for these outputs as well, but note that for REF 2021 it is only journal articles and conference proceedings that must meet the Open Access requirements to be admissible to REF.

Even if you think you may not need to meet the Open Access requirements for a particular article or conference proceeding, or if you think someone outside of Oxford Brookes will meet the requirements on your behalf - it is easy to misunderstand HEFCE's Open Access requirements and in particular it is safer to try to meet all the requirements ourselves rather than relying on an external person or organisation
