Drinking motives, socioeconomic factors and the harm-reduction potential of NoLo alcohol products for mid-life women
Our study with 497 mid‑life women found that taste motives strongly predicted NoLo use, while enhancement motives were linked to lower use and lower perceived helpfulness of NoLo products. We also uncovered widespread confusion around ABV definitions, with many assuming “alcohol‑free” means 0%, an important barrier for harm‑reduction messaging.
We also found that NoLo use was more common among women with higher education and higher income, raising important questions about equity and who is likely to benefit if NoLos are prioritised as a harm‑reduction approach.
This project was genuinely collaborative, shaped by women’s lived experiences and the insights shared through our co‑production work with stakeholders.
