Hello from everyone at Oxford Brookes Careers!
Did you know that Careers do more than just look at CVs and help worried Final Year students in the months before they graduate?
In fact, Careers can support you with your personal and professional development from your first day at University.
We highly recommend looking out for Careers in your first weeks at University, at Freshers' Fairs, and in your courses to hear about the opportunities we have on offer to gain experience and develop your employability throughout your time at University.
Watch this short video to hear Sahand talk about the different ways Careers can help you make the most of your time at University, including the in-person and virtual resources available to you.
Activity 2: How do I know what my strengths are?
We really don't spend enough time thinking about our strengths and what makes us stand out from the crowd! Knowing what our strengths are and using them to help us make well informed decisions is very empowering and can help us flourish in our studies and our work. Lots of research tells us that when we are using our strengths we are happier, more engaged and more fulfilled - sounds good to me. In the following video, Iona talks you through the difference between your strengths and your skills and shows you three different activities that can help you work out what your strengths are.
You may find it helpful to have something next to you to make some notes on as you go along. You are welcome to pause the video as we go to take part in the activities as they all require you to have a little bit of thinking time.
The activities are all called Reflections so the idea is that they are on-going; we hope that by posing some of the reflection questions here, you can take those questions away with you and have them in your mind over the coming months and become used to thinking about your strengths on a regular basis.
You can find the links and a reminder of the activities on the How Do I Know What My Strengths Are Resources sheet too.
Activity 3: Writing Applications that Work
Hints and tips about writing good applications and personal statements is something we get asked about all the time. In this next video, Julie shares some of her top tips for what makes an application really stand out - and a few things to avoid too!
Whether you are writing your first CV, applying for a part-time job or starting to think about what could go into your University personal statement, Julie will help you work out how to write one with impact.
