At BSM, technology is used purposefully to support great teaching, meaningful learning, wellbeing, and future readiness. We believe technology should enhance education rather than dominate it.
We believe in a 'PedTech' approach in which technology should support high-quality teaching and meaningful learning.
Devices are used when they add genuine educational value, not simply because they are available.
Students learn in a structured, age-appropriate digital environment.
Students also continue to learn through discussion, handwriting, reading, practical activities, collaboration, sport, and creative experiences away from screens.
Students develop digital literacy, creativity, and critical thinking.
Students are explicitly taught how to use technology safely, critically, ethically, and independently.
The introduction of 1:1 Chromebooks from Year 4 onwards is a carefully considered educational decision linked to student development, curriculum needs, and future readiness.
Having 1:1 devices allows teachers to support independent research, collaboration, creativity, and digital organisation in age-appropriate and structured ways.
Students in Year 4 are typically ready to begin developing greater independence with digital tools under teacher guidance. This includes learning how to manage files, navigate online platforms, collaborate digitally, and use technology responsibly.
Digital tools support many areas of learning including writing, multilingual support, inquiry, research, formative assessment, and creative projects.
Introducing devices within a structured school environment allows students to develop healthy habits and responsible behaviours with guidance from teachers and parents.
Different age groups access technology in different ways.
Students in Years 1–3 use highly restricted and monitored school-owned Chromebooks with whitelist-only access.
From Year 4 onwards, students begin using school-managed 1:1 Chromebooks with age-appropriate filtering, monitoring, and safeguarding systems in place.
School-managed Chromebooks include filtering and safeguarding systems designed to reduce distractions and protect students from inappropriate content.
Chromebooks are learning tools and are not permitted in unsupervised social spaces such as playgrounds or dining areas.
BSM also recognises the importance of reducing unnecessary distraction and supporting student wellbeing.
In Secondary School, students use Yondr pouches to securely store mobile phones during the school day. Phones are not used during lessons or social time unless explicitly authorised by staff.
This approach supports:
Focus and concentration
Positive social interaction
Reduced distraction
Healthy digital habits
A calmer learning environment
