Art

*Week of March 16th - 20th*

MONDAY 3/16/20

Dear 6th graders (Mondays, 3rd period):

Happy Monday!

We will continue working on our Wonkavator projects when we return to the art room.

For art this week, please refer to your bookmarked research images of Animal #1 and Animal #2 (and Animal #3, if you chose a third option. If you do not already have an Animal #3, you do not need one at this point). On a blank sheet of drawing paper or computer paper, in No. 2 pencil, draw your hybrid (or tribrid) creature! Remember to create this creature using the characteristics, or attributes, of each animal that you identify with, and admire the most. Remember to create a hybrid habitat for your creature in the background, too. Please only work in pencil for now. When you are done drawing the creature and its habitat, please email me a picture of your work. I will review it and email you back with next steps for your work. I will be checking emails Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays until 3pm. Feel free to reach out with any questions.

See you soon!

Dear 3rd graders (Mondays, 4th period):

Happy Monday! We will continue working on our class quilt when we return to the art room.

Since we have just finished filling our golden eggs with all the things we want most (Willy Wonka), and creating nests for them, it's time to imagine what it would be like if we were....birds! Maybe you're a goose that laid one of those golden eggs? Or are you a duck? :) If you're not sure which bird you want to be, take a look outside your window....now that spring is in the air, you may see some inspiration fly by! Or maybe the bird you want to be doesn't live in nature....can you use your imagination to invent it? YES! What color(s) will you be? What will your feathers look like? Which part of yourself will you add to your bird, to let us know that it's you?

On a blank piece of drawing paper or computer paper, with a No. 2 pencil, please draw yourself as a bird! In the background, draw a place that you would like to fly to (real or imagined). When you are finished drawing in pencil, color it in! This is a two or three session project, but please feel free to spend as much time on it as you'd like :)

If you have any questions, I will be checking emails Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays until 3pm.

See you soon!

Dear Mrs. B's 1st Graders (Mondays, 5th period):

Happy Monday!

Now that spring is here, it's time to look outside for the beautiful colors popping up all around us. We may even see all of them at once, in a rainbow! Which color in the rainbow is your favorite? Why do you like that one the best? Can you name some things that are your favorite color?

Using a blank sheet of drawing paper or computer paper, a glue stick, scissors, stickers, and/or other images that you print from online or find in a magazine--please cut and paste these pictures to fill up your entire paper with things that are your favorite color! (for example, a sheet of paper collaged with all things red, or all things blue, etc.). This does not all have to be done at once--please work on this at your leisure. Please allow finished work to dry overnight. When dry, please place the collage in your child's folder, to send back to school. We can do a show-and-tell with these finished works when we get back to the art room :)

If you have any questions, I will be checking emails Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays until 3pm.

See you soon!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear 8th graders (Mondays, 9th period):

Happy Monday! We will finish our Willy Wonka lollipop stage props when we return to the art room.

For now, let's focus on ourselves....our selfies! As promised, we are going to begin drawing self-portraits. Attached is a link to a practice sheet with self-portrait instructions (https://www.crayola.com/free-coloring-pages/print/how-to-draw-portraits-coloring-page/ ). The sheet is also embedded below.

We will not be meeting. Please print this sheet, read through the guidelines, and notice that at the bottom of the sheet, there are 3 grids. Using a No. 2 pencil, a clipboard/binder/piece of cardboard under your sheet of paper to lean on, and a mirror, please observe your reflection and sketch your face on the practice grids. Work one at a time, drawing a complete face in each grid--but please do not rush to complete it Really try your best to focus on details. For now, we are only focusing on the facial features (we will add further details, like ears and hair, later on). *When you finish the first portrait, evaluate it to decide what you will keep or change for the second one. When you finish the second portrait, evaluate it to decide what you will keep or change for the third one.* When you are done with your 3 practice portraits, please take a picture of your finished work, and email it to me. I will review it and give you feedback on your next steps.

If you have any questions, I will be checking emails Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays until 3pm.

See you soon!

WEDNESDAY 3/18/20

Dear Kindergarten (Wednesdays, 3rd period),

Happy Wednesday! I hope that tricky leprechaun didn't make too much of a mess for you yesterday! Did you follow the rainbow to find his pot of gold? Which colors were in that rainbow?

Here is a video about my friend, Roy G. Biv. He is small, and hard to catch--like a leprechaun--but he does good work, like helping us to remember the order of the colors in the rainbow: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gf33ueRXMzQ

Please watch this video (as many times as you'd like :) When you're finished watching, using a piece of drawing or computer paper, No. 2 pencil and crayons/markers, please draw a picture of a rainbow in Roy G. Biv order. If it's hard to remember, listen to, or sing the song, to help you figure it out. In the background, you can draw yourself, your friends and family, or even Roy!

If you have any questions, I will be checking email Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays until 3pm.

See you soon!

Name that Color - REVISED.pdf

Dear Mrs. Roller's 2nd Graders (Wednesdays, 4th period),

Happy Wednesday! We will continue our class quilt when we get back to the art room :)

For now, let's think SPRING! Have you noticed any new flowers popping up when you're looking out your windows, or going to the park? Maybe even the clothes you're wearing have brighter colors, now that it's getting warmer outside. The next time it rains, make sure to look at the sky, to see if you can spy a rainbow! There are so many beautiful colors in the world, it's hard to choose a favorite--so I am going to ask you to invent some new ones!

Please print the "Name that Color!" worksheet, attached.

Using crayons, please mix your colors together inside each circle on your paper--with any number of colors, in any combination you'd like--to create a brand new color! When you finish mixing, make sure to give that new color a name, on the line below the circle. Please complete two sheets--but feel free to make more, if you'd like! :) You can work on this over the next two weeks. **Please also keep completed sheets, as they will be referenced for our next project. Feel free to share pictures of finished work with me--I am always excited to see what my students create!**

If you have any questions, I will be checking email Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays until 3pm.

See you soon!

Dear Mrs. Maxwell's 1st Grade Boys Club (Wednesdays, 7th period):

Happy Wednesday!

Now that spring is here, it's time to look outside for the beautiful colors popping up all around us. We may even see all of them at once, in a rainbow! Which color in the rainbow is your favorite? Why do you like that one the best? Can you name some things that are your favorite color?

Dear 7th Grade (Wednesdays, 8th period),

Happy Wednesday! We will not be meeting, please find your assignment below:

Now that we have completed our work with drawing and shading 3D forms, it is time to move forward with our still life!

Thank you for bringing your personal objects into class to draw--they will be returned to you when we get back to school. For the time being, please select 3-4 objects in your home (or outside!) to draw from observation. Try as best you can to find objects that each have a shape we've been practicing (a sphere, a cube, a cylinder and/or a cone). Arrange those 3-4 objects together in any way you'd like. On a sheet of drawing paper or computer paper, using No. 2 pencil, draw a horizon line first, and then begin drawing the objects on your paper (draw them below the horizon line, unless you want them to levitate :) Try your best to draw what you see--which means lots of close l@@king! Capture as many details as you can.

Work only in pencil for now, remembering to also sketch your objects' shadow shapes. Please have this preliminary sketch of all objects and their shadow shapes finished by next Wednesday, 3/25. Please take a picture of your finished sketch, and email it to me so I can review it and give you feedback on your next steps. Please keep your original drawing because we will continue to work on it over the next few weeks.

If you have any questions, I will be checking email Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays until 3pm.

See you soon!

FRIDAY 3/27/20

Hi 4TH AND 5TH Grade!

Please watch the videos below on Zentangles! Watch them in order "Zentangle 1" first, and "Zentangle 2 second." The video cut off, so please also see photos 3, 4 and 5 for some examples of what to do next. I worked in Sharpie so that my design would show up better on the video, but you should start in pencil if you have one. When your pencil drawing is finished, you can go back and add color with markers (or crayons) later on.

Do your Zentangles have to look like mine? NO! Please make up your own patterns and designs, and take your time with these. They will be due after Spring Break. 4th grade has already had some practice with this, but please make a new design. 5th grade, please start fresh! Helpful hint: you do not have to finish your drawings all at once! If you need extra time, or really enjoy working on the details, please feel free to work on your drawings little by little (15-30 mins) each day until the due date! And if you need extra time, no problem--just let me know.

Please feel free to send me photos or videos of your work, I can't wait to see what you make!

If you have any questions, I will be checking email Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays until 3pm.

Your bird self-portraits are due today! If you have not already done so, please email me a picture or video of your completed work. If you are having trouble, or need some extra inspiration, here is an Audubon guide to North American birds you can use for observational drawing (draw what you see): https://www.audubon.org/bird-guide

Remember, your bird doesn't have to look exactly like the picture--make it your own!

Oval Hunt.pdf

5th PERIOD: 1st Grade (Mrs. B's Class)

View the videos below in order (Pt. 1, then Pt. 2), to design your own Hatchimal!

You will need a sheet of paper (drawing or computer, or whatever you have), a pair of scissors, a pencil, and a marker (a ruler is optional).

You may draw any creature you'd like inside your egg (even if it's not a creature that actually hatches from an egg in nature). Some ideas to start would be a chick, an insect, even a dino! Make sure to color it, too! When you're done making the inside of the egg, feel free to decorate the outside of the egg!

Advanced steps:

1 - After tracing your egg's crack, open your egg flaps, and cut out the crack on the bottom flap (just as I did for the top flap). Now the points of the top and bottom cracks will be able to close together more cleanly.

2 - If you would like to make a larger egg, hold your paper vertically to start; then follow the rest of the same steps in the video, drawing your oval larger, from the top of the page to the bottom. This will allow you to make one big egg.

Your finished eggs will be due by end of day on Monday, 4/6. If you need more time, please let me know.

If you have any questions, I will be checking email Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays until 3pm.

9th PERIOD: 8th Grade (continued)

Hi 8th Grade,

Please watch the video for details on your assignment. Please remember that you DO NOT have to finish your drawing before you can eat your lunch--it also does not have to be today's lunch. This will be due by end of day next Wednesday, 4/8, so it can be any lunch you are particularly inspired by this week. Food is art, too :) Take a picture of your meal (or a few pictures at different angles), and use the photo(s) as your reference to draw from. That means: look closely at the details of your lunch objects in the picture(s) you take, and draw what you see in that photo on your paper. Work in No. 2 pencil, first. Then please add color to your drawing (only if you have coloring materials at home--do not go out and buy new materials to work with). If you want to email me your drawing before you color, for a final check, please do--otherwise, move ahead and have fun with this experiment!

If you want to email me your drawing before you color, for a final check, please do--otherwise, move ahead and have fun with this activity! All the practice we've done with drawing 3D objects from observation will help guide you through this.

Hi ECC!

Please view the attached video and worksheets. Today we will be creating masks of our favorite spring insects/bugs. Which one would you like to BEE? :)

You can choose from a bumble bee, a ladybug, a caterpillar, a butterfly (advanced). Students may want to use traditional colors (red for the ladybug, yellow for the bee), or they may want to be inventive and choose other colors--please feel free to decorate these however you want! To create the mask, cut out any shapes that have a dashed line. Pictures are shown of the masks before cutting, and after, as a guide. Please also taper the shapes to fit the children's faces, as necessary.

Please send along photos or videos of the children working on and wearing their bug masks! I can't wait to see what they make!

If you have any questions, I will be checking email Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays until 3pm.

*WEEK OF 4/5/2020 - 4/11/2020*

MONDAY 4/6/20

3rd PERIOD: 6th Grade

Hi 6th Grade,

Please view the video below. Your hieroglyphic pen pal letters are due today!

I want you to imagine you can communicate with a 6th grader living in ancient Egypt. What would you like to know about their life? Write them a letter in hieroglyphics (the language of ancient Egypt) to find out more about them, using the hieroglyphics key I posted last week--I am posting it again, below. Aim for 2 paragraphs.

If it helps, you can write a rough draft of the letter in English first, and then translate it into hieroglyphics for your final copy. Please send me a picture of your finished work by the end of the day, today.

If you have any questions, I will be checking email until 3pm Monday and Wednesday this week.

Enjoy your spring break!

There are no classes Thursday 4/9/2020 through Sunday 4/19/2020. If you would like to make more art over the break, please consider this special request from Mr. Rubenacker:

Also, to those of you who are on the frontlines in healthcare helping patients or volunteering during this pandemic, we send you our continued gratitude for your selfless and heroic work. In support of the healthcare personnel and patients at Southside Hospital, we are asking for all ECC-8th grade students to help us with an important task. Nursing management at the Hospital has requested for our students to make fish and sea-life pictures to decorate a make-shift patient space that they have set up with an "aquarium" theme. We ask that children spend some time over spring break creating these pictures. They can be left at the school, in a plastic mailbox outside of the front door dedicated to supporting our healthcare personnel or mailing it directly to me, at 117 Locust Lane, Northport, NY 11768 by Friday, April 17th. We sincerely thank the Chinitz family for helping to facilitate this important project in a time where we can provide some cheer to those who are most in need.

Have a healthy, happy Spring Break!

*Week of 4/19/20 - 4/25/20*

Monday 4/20/20

3rd PERIOD: 6th Grade

Reminder: The note to your pen pal in ancient Egypt, written in hieroglyphics, is due today! Once you have completed this letter and sent a picture or video of it to me, please begin the next activity:

"Journey into Surrealism" (Scholastic Article)

Please read this two-page article on Surrealism, and the Surrealist artist, Salvador DalĂ. In a separate Google Doc, using full sentences, please answer the three bolded questions from the text:

1 - (Page 1, top, The Persistence of Memory, 1931) How does DalĂ contrast reality and dreams in this painting?

2 - (Page 2, Swans Reflecting Elephants, 1937) Why is illusion an important part of the composition below?

3 - (Page 2, Lobster Telephone, 1936) What does DalĂ accomplish by juxtaposing a lobster and a telephone?

Let's pay close attention to the image of the artist's "Lobster Telephone," composed of a lobster....and a telephone :) By pairing these unrelated objects, DalĂ created a Surrealist sculpture--and I'd like you to do the same! Using one object from the indoors, and one object from the outdoors/nature (both objects are to be school appropriate), assemble your own juxtaposed sculpture! When it's complete, please take a picture of your creation (you can be in the picture, too!) In the same Google Doc from above, add a section about your own sculpture. Give your sculpture a title, and write one paragraph describing the objects you used, why you chose them, and the function of your sculpture.

The completed Google Doc and picture of your sculpture are due Monday, 5/4/20. If you have any questions, I will be checking email this Friday until 3pm.

4th PERIOD: 3rd Grade

Hi 3rd Grade,

In honor of Earth Day this week, please watch this video of a classic environmental hero, Captain Planet!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7eJGV8QWps&app=desktop

I hope you enjoy this episode! When you are finished watching, please think about which power you would like to use to help protect our world. Will you choose Earth, Wind, Fire, Water, or Heart? Once you've made your choice, please draw and color a picture of how you will use your power. Make sure to illustrate yourself and your power, as well as a landscape scene showing your power in action!

Please use any coloring materials you have to color in your picture (please do not go out to buy any additional materials - anything you already have to work with is just fine). Your illustration will be due on Monday, 5/4/20. Please send me a picture or video of your completed work.

9th PERIOD: 8th Grade

Hi 8th Grade,

Now that you have completed sketches of your lunch, it is time to look at another artist inspired by food (and other things, too):

Please watch this video on Arcimboldo:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLqwBf_tzWk&app=desktop

When you are finished viewing please do a scavenger hunt--either inside your house, in your backyard, or during your next visit to a park, to gather objects and materials you find interesting, and use them to make a portrait! It can be a self-portrait, a portrait of a friend or family member, or an invented character (school appropriate). You can build it flat on a table or on the floor, or try to stack and interlock objects to create a standing 3D form.

Like Arcimboldo, you can use plants, vegetables, fruit, flowers, or books....but feel free to exercise your creativity by including any number of other items you may have around you that you think would be fun (and safe!) to work with.

This sculpture will be due on Monday 5/4/20. When it is complete, please give it a title, and send me a picture or video of it.

If you have any questions, I will be checking email this Friday until 3pm.

FRIDAY 4/24/20

2nd PERIOD: 5th Grade

Hi 5th Grade!

Since you've been practicing creating structured patterns with shapes on paper, it's time to expand this vision! We will now work with mandala, Sanskrit for "circle," to take our designs in a new direction.

Watch this video for an explanation and examples of how mandalas are made:

https://www.filmsforaction.org/watch/making-art-without-money-nature-mandala/

As the artist says in the video, "the art store is all around you." Please do not go out to buy any new materials. Part of the mindfulness of this mandala exercise is using what you have around you to make something new and beautiful! You can collect natural materials outdoors and construct your mandala in your backyard or at the park--or you can gather these natural materials and use them to construct a mandala indoors, just like the artist did! (with your parents'/guardians' permission, of course). If you do not want to use materials from nature, you do not have to--feel free to use any household items (toys, crayons, spoons?, etc.) to create your own mandala. It can be any size you want, and you can make more than one if you want! This can be an individual activity, or a household activity!

Just remember to start from the center, and work your way out. Your mandala should take on a circular shape as you work outwards.

When you are finished constructing, please take a picture or video of your mandala and send it to me. Your mandala(s) are due Friday, 5/8/20.

If you have any questions, I will be checking email this Friday until 3pm.

5th PERIOD: Nursery (Mrs. Gorman and Mrs. K)

Hi Nursery,

Rain, rain go away, come again another day....

With all the rainy days we've been having, something tells me you've all been singing this song A LOT :)

This week, you'll have some raindrops in your artwork, too! In pencil, please trace these raindrops along the dashed line. When you finish tracing each raindrop, number it in the center (so, the first raindrop you trace will be 1, the second raindrop you trace will be 2, and so on). How many raindrops are there?

When you are finished tracing, please color in the clouds, making sure to color AROUND the raindrops! What color are rain clouds?

When you are finished coloring in the clouds, please color in the sky, making sure to color AROUND the raindrops AND the clouds. What color(s) have you seen in a stormy sky?

Completed sheets are due on Friday, 5/8. If you have any questions I will be checking emails Mondays and Fridays until 3pm.

***5th PERIOD Friday 5/1/20: Pre-K Mrs. Duffy, Pre-K Mrs. Thomson***

Hi Pre-K!

My apologies for the delay in getting this to you! Attached please find an art activity sheet to help us celebrate

Cinco de Mayo!

The shapes on your sheet are maracas - they are musical instruments, and you can often hear them being played in music from Mexico!

To hear what they sound like, please watch this quick clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmz0_52lwic

Do you notice something else that's special about maracas? That's right! They have a pattern, and they match!

Please draw and color a matching pattern on each of your maracas! Completed sheets will be due Friday, 5/15.

If you have any questions, I will be checking email until 3pm Monday and Friday this week.
