Physical Education activities intentionally focus on students' social-emotional development in addition to physical skills. Any liberal arts education ought to embed opportunities in the curriculum for students to practice the skills and understandings necessary to communicate, collaborate, and otherwise interact with their peers. Students will often work in pairs and groups to accomplish a shared goal; for instance, students will practice passing and catching in pairs and small groups so that they can assimilate these skills in game play situations. All topics that students confront with great depth and complexity will render possibilities to develop values, good sportsmanship, social-emotional awareness, and understandings; this course both creates and capitalizes on teachable moments.
We try to take advantage of our close proximity to Fryman Canyon, and when the weather is nice, and it appears that the students can use a break to get off campus, we like to go for nice hikes during class.
Throughout the course, we will practice many agility drills and core strength building exercises. These are exercises that we will do routinely all year long. Every few months students will be tested on their ability to do these exercises. Here we are looking for improved form and strength as the year progresses.
