Reading and Literary Analysis
Students will:
- Show a good understanding of texts through class discussion and written work.
- Analyze and evaluate texts to draw conclusions about the broader historical, cultural, or societal impact of a work, appraising the significance of supporting evidence and details, and explaining the influence of elements such as tone, point of view, style, and structure.
- Read texts to comprehend central ideas or themes (explicit and implicit), identify supporting evidence and details, and draw clear inferences and conclusions.
- Gain an understanding of literary analysis and be introduced to some of the basic tools and terms of literary analysis.
- Know basic literary devices (e.g. irony, metaphor, imagery, and alliteration) and be able to apply this understanding to literary analysis and to their own writing

Students will:
- Engage in civil class discussion with peers.
- Participate in, and contribute meaningfully to, class discussions of texts
- Support oral arguments with specific evidence from texts.
- Communicate a clear main idea in an organized way, making connections between related details, utilizing visuals effectively and maintaining appropriate control over voice and body language.

Students will:
- Write creatively to build fluency and enjoyment.
- Write persuasive, informative, and narrative texts that convey complex ideas, organizing content clearly and coherently, utilizing evidence to support analysis.
- Demonstrate an understanding of standard English conventions, applying knowledge of language to show how language functions in different contexts to make effective choices for meaning or style.
- Know a basic essay structure and how to subjugate structure to purpose.
- Keep up with grammar and meet targets appropriate to their individual skill levels and pace.
