Juniors are encouraged to look ahead and, with the help of our guidance counselor, firm up post-secondary goals. Are they seeking a four year liberal arts education or a specialized program in art or computer science? Would they benefit from taking a gap year or from more specialized career-focused study? What kinds of supports will they need? Will they be looking to stay near their home base or travel across the country or abroad?
See pages on gap years, transitional programs, portfolios, and college search resources for more information.
Our guidance counselors partner with families to determine priorities and find schools and programs that are the best fit for each student. We also work to make sure that students are prepared for the challenges ahead.
School-based accommodations testing is provided through Bridges' College Counseling office for College Board tests and for the ACT.
Bridges offers the PSAT to students in the Fall of their Junior year. Juniors are encouraged to begin college admissions testing by Spring of the Junior year.
Many colleges are now test optional! Check out the list of test optional colleges at FairTest.
The next stepping stone after high school may be a four year college, but it may equally be a planned year abroad to learn a language, an internship, or time taken to learn to be independent from the family nest. That next step could be a gap year volunteering with Americorps or building a school in South America. It could include a trade apprenticeship, travel abroad, or taking classes to earn a certification in anything from music technology to computer graphics to respiratory therapy or from sustainable construction management to technical theater to gas & electrical welding to cloud computing.
