Re: Expectations and Requirements for Virtual Enterprises International (VEI) _________________________________________________________________________
Congratulations! Welcome to VEI. I am glad that you are a part of the Virtual Enterprises International Program. This is a unique opportunity for you!
What is the Virtual Enterprises International? The Virtual Enterprise (VE) is a simulated business environment. The VEI employees (i.e., you, the students) will be involved in actual "on-the-job" work experiences, including purchasing, sales, marketing, accounting, personnel, etc. The only difference between the VE and an actual business is that no material goods are produced or legal tender exchanged. However, in our case, we might be able to sell our products at the school farmstand. The VE website will generate the documents and information needed to do business with other VE companies locally and internationally. You will work in one or more of the departments in the VE organization. In your department, you will be expected to work individually and as a member of a team to fulfill the responsibilities and tasks associated with your department. You will develop initiative, creativity, and responsibility, enhance your oral and written communication skills, and improve your ability to work on a team.
What is the goal of the VE experience? The VE experience will weave together several academic disciplines and occupational subjects, thereby overcoming fragmentation of subjects. By working in the VE, you will better understand how your learning has application and relevance to real life. The goal is to create a learning environment that, through a series of activities, integrates school and work, to enhance learning. In effect, the VE will drive the learning, the applications, and the educational experiences and opportunities. Through your experiences in the VE, you will come to see that there exists an important connection between all disciplines, and that what you learn is relevant to your future.
Congratulations again and welcome to VEI! Please continue reading about the specifics of our program on the following pages.

Extra Help Time: Mr. Kaiser: Tuesdays 2:45-3:20
Grading Policy:
How will I be evaluated as a VEI employee? Grading Policy - Your final grade will be based on the four marking period grades. Once determined your grade will also be registered with Long Island University for college credit and will be on your official transcript. You will receive 6 college credits for this class as long as your grade is above the minimum requirements.
Grades will be determined based on the following types of activities:
DEPARTMENT WORK: This includes work that you produce within your Department per quarter. This might include, but is not limited to business correspondence, reports, charts, tables, brochures, databases, web pages, etc. These documents will become part of your VEI Portfolio.
EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS: Students will be graded on items such as their professionalism, initiative, productivity and collaboration skills as defined in the Employability Skills rubric that is attached to this syllabus.
WEEKLY LOG: The ability to plan, reflect, and assess your performance in VEI is critical to your success. You will be required to set quarterly goals, prepare monthly task calendars and monitor weekly progress.
PURCHASES: As an employee in VEI, you are expected to purchase from other VEI firms. A Monthly Purchase Report must be completed and copies of all relevant documents (invoice, bank statement account summary, order confirmation) must be submitted.
MEETINGS: Meetings are crucial to the efficient and productive operation of a VEI firm. Professional business attitude, active participation, and advanced preparation are required at meetings. Please come prepared to share what you have been working on. VP’s and chiefs will need to prepare an agenda prior to class beginning on the day of the scheduled meeting.
PROFESSIONAL LEARNING: This includes the development of your department trainings, facilitation of the training to the rest of the company, assessment provided during a training sessions, and continuing education activities. Topics will be assigned. Presenters are required to dress in business professional attire and all students will be assessed on professional development sessions presented by other departments.
PERSONAL FINANCE: You will act just like a normal entry level employee. You will be given a bi-monthly salary. With this salary you will have to find an apartment, pay rent, utilities, and other normal expenses. You will also have to provide transportation to your work site. You can also get married and have children with the normal expenses that might occur.
PRE-POST & TESTS: The pre test will take place during the first month and the post test will take place during May. Review materials will be provided.
In addition, all seniors have the option to take the NOCTI end of program assessment prior to the end of the school year. This could provide you with an additional 3 college business credits.
ATTENDANCE: Excessive tardiness and absences may result in missed deadlines and negatively impact the quality of your work (i.e. purchase report, weekly logs, evaluations, professional learning, meetings, etc.) and lower your grade. You will be “clocking in”. You will not be paid on the days you are absent.
EMPLOYEE EVALUATION: At the end of each quarter your evaluation is based upon your performance and self- assessment. The Human Resources department will facilitate all performance appraisals. The facilitator is responsible for issuing the grade based on the appraisal.
PORTFOLIO: The portfolio will be developed throughout the year and assessed at the end of each quarter. There are several parts/requirements in the portfolio.
How do I make-up work if I have been absent? It is your responsibility to talk with your Departmental VP or Chief to determine what tasks need to be completed.
What are the company policies for technology use, dress code, performance, and unethical behavior (i.e. plagiarism)? The company policies are outlined in the VEI employee handbook and Bridgehampton student handbook. After reading the VEI policies, you will sign the document and it will be stored in your personnel file. Violation of these policies will be handled by the CEO and the Human Resources Department. Violations may jeopardize your credit and future with the firm.
What behavior is expected in VEI?
As an employee, you are expected to:
➢ Conduct yourself professionally.
➢ Be on time to work each day.
➢ Have a positive attitude.
➢ Follow all company policies.
➢ Treat each other with respect.
➢ Be prepared for work each day by bringing the proper materials such as pen, pencil,
documents, and binder.
➢ Participate in company/department tasks.

“You have to have your heart in the business and the business in your heart” Thomas J. Watson
*Cell Phone use is prohibited in class. Cell phones are to be left in the student’s locker. If a cell phone is brought into class it will be held by the teacher until the end of the day. The resulting delay in getting started and disruption to class that this causes will result in a company disciplinary action and also will harm student grades.*
*Note*
The trade shows and field trips in Virtual Enterprise are integral to the course and vital to the learning environment. During the multiple trade shows there are presentations and duties to perform on the trade show floor. The other members of the class are all depending upon each other for help during these events. Attendance is mandatory to these events. Grades will be earned at these trade shows that cannot be made up. In the event of unforeseen circumstances in which the student cannot attend, there is an alternative essay that will be assigned. This is an extensive research essay that will be commensurate with expectations for a college level student. See below for the requirements for this essay:
Alternate Option to attending field trip:
Essay for VEI:
This essay will be a minimum of 30 pages double space, typed, 12 point text
This will be a research essay on a topic in business. Topic will be approved by teacher. You will research this subject, providing a minimum of 30 research based articles on the topic and a fully referenced bibliography in MLA style. The first part of the essay will be a research review with annotated references throughout the essay.
*Note* Mr. Kaiser doesn’t want you to take this option, please attend the trade shows!!
The VE class listened to keynote speaker Chuck Garcia, Assistant Dean at LIU and a noted public speaker and motivator. They then went to breakout groups in which the students worked in small groups to complete a leadership challenge or skit. The top five groups of the events then presented on the stage of the Tilles Center.
The Marketing Class teamed up to help Neo and Sascha with sales for the day. They made over $150,000 in virtual sales for Continental Cuisine!
This was a mini trade show and luncheon to give our East End districts an experience of what a trade show is like. One member of the class had to give a brief speech about the company.
Sheily and her sales team joined together to sell at the LIU tradeshow. At this event Sheily presented her business plan to judges and also won a gold award for the Long Island Website Competition.
Students traveled to the Javits Center, set up their tradeshow booth and sold to all!
