STUDENT ATTENDANCE; BEHAVIOR; PERFORMANCE

Attendance Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each class. Students are required to attend all classes. Attendance policy will be followed via the rules in the school handbook. Please be courteous and arrive ON TIME for class.

Classroom Behavior

• PDAs, cell phones, smartphones, etc. cannot be in use during class. If you are seen using these devices, you will be asked to leave the class for the day. You will be marked absent for the class session.

• Laptops, iPads, and other electronic devices for the purposes of taking notes and reviewing materials may be allowed with the explicit approval of the professor. Use for other purposes will not be tolerated. If you are seen using these devices for purposes other than those explicitly allowed, you will be asked to leave the class for the day. You will be marked absent for the class session.

• You are expected to bring your Chromebook to class each day.

• If you come to class late, be sure to see me after class so that I mark you late rather than absent. Please let me know in advance, if you can, that you are going to be late.

• Chronic lateness will not be tolerated.

• If you know that you must leave class early, please let me know before class begins. Note that leaving early regularly without professor approval is the same as being chronically late; you will be marked accordingly.

• Do not converse with your neighbor during class. If you have something to share with the class, you should raise your hand and wait to be called upon.

• You are expected to not leave the classroom during the class period, but if an emergency arises, leave the room quietly and return as soon as possible using the pass on the door.

Performance: The student is responsible for fulfilling all course requirements and completing all course assignments to receive credit for the course. If classes are missed for any reason, the student is not excused for any missed work.

Class participation – you are expected to contribute to this class by (1) offering opinions regarding the issues being discussed, (2) asking relevant questions about the subject matter, and (3) responding to questions posed by the instructor and your classmates.

Scholarly attitude – when you are in this class, you are expected to act like an adult. You should (1) arrive on time and be prepared, (2) pay attention, and (3) treat everyone with respect.

I have selected what I consider to be the essential units through which we will explore the world of sport management.  Generally, each unit will consist of the following types of activities:

I: READINGS AND LECTURE MATERIALS: Typically, each unit begins with reading the assigned textbook chapter. You must read all assigned chapters! There will also be articles and sometimes multimedia assets that you must review for the unit. Please note that each unit will include the PPT for the assigned textbook chapter. While the PPT is a useful guide, it is not a substitute for reading the textbook chapter.

II: PROFESSOR INITIATED-STUDENT LED DISCUSSIONS: This activity is considered the lifeblood of the course. This is where and when we will be able to interact and discuss topics related to the class material. If you do not participate, there is no way for me to know if you understand the material. Also, without adequate participation, this course will be nothing more than a lecture course. So be there, be an active participant and, be scholarly!

III: GRADED ASSIGNMENTS/EXAMS: Graded assignments and exams are opportunities to transfer the information you have learned from the textbook and articles/videos and other materials into application-oriented activities. All directions will be provided to you. Follow the instructions carefully and as always, ask questions if you don't understand something. Make sure you complete the graded assignments and exams in their entirety. Please be mindful of due dates. Assignment details and dates will be posted to Google Classroom at the beginning of each week.

SUMMARY OF EXPECTATIONS

What I expect of you....

I hope that each of you will enjoy this learning experience and that upon completion feel that we have accomplished something. But we need to remember that this is a COLLEGE-LEVEL course requiring college-level work and commitment. I expect on-going, active participation from each of you in this course.

It is up to each of you to define your work time required for this course. Due dates and submission of materials will be strictly enforced! I expect each of you to do YOUR OWN WORK and complete it fairly. Just because you are doing an assignment or taking an exam online does not mean that you are allowed any different rules with respect to personal integrity and cheating. Any form of cheating will not be tolerated and a grade of zero will be received. I expect each of you to behave and participate honestly and to respect everyone participating in this course.

EACH CLASS WILL SEEM TO BE OVER IN AN INSTANT! IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT YOU COMMIT YOURSELF TO MAINTAINING THE REQUIRED PACE TO KEEP UP WITH THE RIGOR OF THIS COURSE. YOU MUST BE DISCIPLINED IN YOUR WORK AND REMAIN ACTIVE IN THIS COURSE.

What you can expect from me You should, in all instances, expect to be treated fairly and with respect. Please understand that I must follow the course rules and requirements too. I must treat everyone in this class the same. I will treat everyone fairly when applying those rules and requirements. I will listen to your concerns and attempt to address them the fairest way I know how. You should expect to feel comfortable in asking questions, asking for help, asking for clarification, etc. You should expect a response in a timely fashion. I try very hard to address your questions and feedback. I care about the contents of this course and I care that you are receiving excellent instruction.

CELL PHONE USE: It’s important that you and your classmates not be distracted from learning. As such, please turn off and put away these devices prior to your entering the classroom. Laptop computers, iPads/tablets – if used in class -- are to be used for academic work only, not for recreational means or surfing of the Internet.

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY: Refer to the Student Code of Conduct Academic Integrity and Disciplinary Procedures.

Additional note regarding academic integrity

• You may confer with others on assignments. However, your answers must be in your own words. If any assignments are submitted that are identical, word for word (or close to it), both will receive a zero. A repeat offense will result in an “F” for the course.

• Students who cheat on exams, regardless of the method or results, will receive a grade of “F” on the assignment or exam.

STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES: If you have a disability for which you are or may be requesting an accommodation (e.g. extra time for tests, readers, sign-language interpreters), you are encouraged to make me aware of this so that I can provide for your needs.

GRADING POLICY: The grade for this course will be a combination of: attendance/class participation, Virtual Sports Business questions and simulations, graded assignments, projects, and exams. You will be expected to submit each graded assignment on time according to the postings on Google Classroom.

Grades and Achievement Points:  You will receive a grade each quarter. Homework is 10-20 points per assignment, quizzes 50 points, exams 100 points, and projects from 50-200 depending on the scope of the project.

Class Performance: This component of your grade is mainly made up of attendance at class and your participation once there. You are expected to read the assigned chapters and other materials assigned for class and to be ready to answer questions based on those materials and to participate in the discussions that arise from the topics being discussed. There will also be a sign up sheet in which each week a student will be expected to bring in a news article about a sports issue. Our class will read the article on a Thursday and we will discuss it as a class on the following Friday. Failure to actively participate in these discussions will affect your performance grade.

Google Classroom: Google classroom will be used to post assignments, used for topic discussion boards, and review materials will also be made available on this site.

Tentative Course Calendar: This is a basic description of the content covered through the year. The textbook will provide some of the foundations for the coursework. Supplementary instruction will be provided through the use of movies, an online facility management program, documentaries, and articles throughout the course of the class.
