* The 1st Mustang soccer team didn’t have any seniors. The seniors were allowed to stay at Brick HS when BMHS opened in 1980.
* The players in the class of ‘82 played two seasons at Brick Township HS before Memorial opened.
* The Mustangs first home field was up the street at Lanes Mill Elementary School.
* The Mustangs played their first game on April 3, 1981 - a loss to Manalapan 1-3.
* Kris Adda scored the first goal in Brick Memorial’s history.
* The first Brick Memorial win came on April 6, 1981. A 5-2 victory over Howell.
* Eileen Reilly recorded BM’s first hat trick on April 6, 1981.
* During the 1981 season the Shore Conference created the “Shore Soccerette Bowl” which matched the Ocean & Monmouth County Tournament Champions vs each other.
* In 1985 the first Shore Conference Tournament was created- 10 years later the ‘Stangs would win the title.
* There have only been 3 Head Coaches in Brick Memorial history. Hank Handchen (1981-1991), Tommy Reilly (1992-1994) & Billy Caruso (1995-present).
* Coaches Caruso (3yrs) & Reilly (5yrs) were both assistants before becoming the Head Coaches.
* In the fall of 1996 the Shore Conference moved girls soccer from the spring to the fall to match the rest of New Jersey.
* The 2003 State Championship team played all of their State Tournament games on the road. As the #9 seed, they won six straight on the road. We called ourselves the "Vikings"- as in we come into your house, beat you up and steal all your stuff!
* The 1999 Mustangs were the first Shore Conference team to ever win a State Championship in girls’ soccer!
* The only Shore Conference teams with more State Championships than the Mustangs are RBC & Shore Regional (5).
* The Mustangs have used the motto “The Hardest Working team at the Shore” since 1995.
* ”Family Forever” has been part of the Mustangs and their alumni since the early 2000s.
* Unlike today, when the 1999 State Championship team played the finals at The College of NJ (Trenton State College back then) it was the 1st time any of those players had played on turf. (Drew University was the only other turf field in the entire state of NJ.)
* The Mustangs have been going on the “Mustang Retreat” (a team bonding trip) since 2002. The traveled to upstate NY, the Poconos, Massachusetts, Atlantic City and various places in New Jersey.
* From 1996 until 2008 the Mustangs played in 13 straight Sectional Semi-final games.
* Bob Coleman has been the emcee for the Mustangs at their annual year end banquet since 2002!
* Current Mustang trainer (& BHMS Class of '89) Sue Penrod has been with the Mustangs since their first State Championship in 1999. Prior too that current guidance counselor Kevin McKnight was in charge of getting the girls back on the field!
* On October 18, 2021 the Mustangs beat Shore Regional 3-2, in the Round of 16 of the SCT. This was Brick Memorial's 500th win!
* In April of 1993 The Mustangs defeated Toms River North 3-2 for the programs 100th win!
* The school's origonal colors were kelly green and gold. The soccer team didn't change to forest green and vegas gold until the early 2000s.
* Rudy has been the movie choice to start the season since 1996.
* Krystal Strada made the Mustang 2x4 in 2002. After a discussion about "being ready to play form the opening whistle" and having the mentality of "smacking somebody with a 2x4." It is carried out by the player who most exemplifies this spirit.
* It has been tradition since the Stangs 1st State Championship in 1999 for the Herbertsville Fire Department to escort the team back to BMHS.
* In 1999 the Mustangs came out to "We Will Rock You" for the first time. Its been a staple at every home game ever since.
*2000 saw the intoduction of Green Days "Good Riddance" (Time of Your Life"). Its played after every game- win, lose or draw.
* In 2003 the Stangs started evry game with the statement "We are Brick Memorial HS- defending State Champions- ACT LIKE IT!" This evolved into today's "...we are 4x State Champions."
*The girls hitting the "Play Like a Champion Today" sign on the way out to the field began in 1998. We stole the idea from Notre Dame.
* In 2001 they added the "I want to thank the good Lord for making me a Mustang" sign to the door. This is a quote from Joe DiMaggio about the Yankees that hangs at Yankee Stadium.
*2019 is the only season that BMHS did not qualify for the NJSIAA State Tournament-- a NOT so Fun Fact. ☹
*In the 1980s & 90s our "home field" was several different places along with BMHS: Lanes Mill School, Ocean County Park, Lake Shenandoah Park and Vets Middle School (pre-stadium/turf field).
*The first "Alumni Game" was held during the summer of 1998. It has been a summer staple to honor past players ever since (minus a few covid years).
*Three former Mustangs have been named Head Coaches in the Shore Conference- Missy Carroll at Lakewood, Megan Heerwagen at Rumson Fair-Haven & Annie McCarthy at Wall.
*The 2022 Mustang squad had three sets of sisters on it!
*The Stangs totally reversed the script in 2023 at Middletwon South by winning a CJ. Gr. III Championship in the 2nd OT. The year before they lost at MS in the second OT!
*In 2024 the Stangs playing "Hey Baby" to end half-time after BC heard it at a game atThe College of New Jersey.
*The following year ('25) the Mustangs started playing the song "Lanes Mill Road" by Brick Memorial alumnus Mike Dalton('85) right before kick off.
*In 2002 we started our "Legacy Brick" tradition. Every player gets to sign a brick on the office wall and leave a message to all future players. We went back and added all previous players name from the year BC started ('95). A lot of players from 1995-2001 came back and added their own message. Have you?!
*In 2002 we began reciting "Old Man" before the game. It is Al Pacino's pregame speech from Any Given Sunday. It started out with the team reciting it along with him and evolved into the girls reciting ot without the audio playing.
