Meet the Staff & TAs

Beth Banks, Camp Director

25th year at camp

12th year as Camp Director

Campus Adventures is my favorite part of summer! I start planning camp courses and afternoon activities in January. I take pride in the quality of camp staff we attract each summer. I spend several months planning a one-week day camp but it is all worth it seeing our camper’s bright, smiling faces flood the halls of the McLarty-Goodson building in July.

I began my career at Brevard College teaching "Life in a Stream" and other classes for Campus Adventures in 1998. Since then I have worked as a biology lab instructor (1999-2014) and now the Administrative Assistant for the Division of Science and Mathematics (2014-current) and of course as the Camp Director for Campus Adventures (since 2012). I've also worked at several local camps, the Cradle of Forestry, and Shenck Job Corps.

As Camp Director for Campus Adventures, I have been able to use my many years on staff to design and implement new programs and protocols at camp:

I am originally from Huntersville, North Carolina. I attended Brevard College 1993-1996 and earned my A.S. degree and a certificate of Outdoor Leadership. I earned my B.S. in Outdoor Education, emphasis in Natural History and a minor in Environmental Education at Northland College in Wisconsin in 1997 and promptly returned to Brevard!

In my spare time I enjoy crafting, reading, swimming in the Davidson River, and playing games. I also invent and make educational games! I have a fun side-business called LittleTree Crafts and Games where I do "game events" for all ages. I have a dog named Freya and two cats (Tilly & Raptor). My husband Oliver and I have 2 kids,  a creative 18 year old daughter, Piper and a brilliant 13 year old son, Charlie. They both grew up going to Campus Adventures every year as well as Gwynn Valley Camp right down the road.

Laura Patch, Assistant Director

4th year at camp

3rd year as Assistant Director

This will be my fourth year with Campus Adventures and 3rd year as Assistant Director. I have taught for 17 years at Brevard High School: Biology, Environmental Science and Science Research. I attended UNC- Greensboro majoring in Biology and Secondary Education with a concentration in Environmental Science and received my Masters in Science Education from Montana State University. I grew up north of Asheville, spent my childhood summers at a camp in Vermont, where I have also worked on and off for 9 years. I have traveled to 43/50 states, Mexico, Canada, 5 European countries, and worked with sea turtles in Costa Rica! Over the years I have also visited 40+ National Parks/Monuments. I have a 4 year old son, Dane, who loves sea turtles and being outside as much as his mom does.  Excited to be a part of the Campus Adventures team this summer!

Deanna Campbell

I have been teaching for 19 years, 16 of those years have been in Brevard. I have two little boys who keep me pretty busy at home. My family and I love to visit our National Parks. Meet the TAs

TAs are older campers that are enrolled in our Leadership Development Program. They help Instructors, Station Leaders, and Group Leaders with daily programming, assist the Camp Director with behind-the-scenes tasks, and help the younger campers get the most out of camp.  They go through the same training that our staff go through and sometimes even join our staff after they graduate High School!

This section is updated frequently during enrollment. Please continue to check back in to learn more about our Camp TAs.
